Fiber install on Monday, need help with ISP

Just to clear this us up. Anyone going over the Vumatel network can only get packages speed wise in 4,20,50,100 mbit flavours at the moment. Nothing inbetween like 8,10mbit etc?

I thought all the packages were limited speed wise by the ISP and not the actual line.
Eg: My ADSL line synch at 10mbit but im on a 4mbit account hence limiting me to 4mbit.

Theoretically speaking if i was on lets say Mweb 4mbit over fiber and i wanted to i want to quickly switch over to
another ISP with a backup account and use a 100mbit account, would that be possible?

I have used crystal web as an ISP and i have no complaints, but that R1000 is a mofo with Vumas R1700 once off install on top of it.

Wallet will dictate at the end but as much as i want that 20mbit, i think il have to settle for 4mbit from another ISP unless my wife decides to stop talking to her sister on phone 6hrs a day and CW can save me with some VOIP

Yes, those are the only available speeds on the Vumatel network. As the ISP, we pay for the line and must select the appropriate speed when we provision. We cannot provision in incremental flavours, so the line is most certainly limited in speed on the Vumatel side.

Each time you switch, the ISP pays R999 to Vumatel, so no you cannot switch like that I'm afraid. No ISP would allow it.

We can give you a 4Mbps account as well with 75GB data or uncapped - your choice. If we could subsidise that R1k we would. But you have to make the call - cheapest uncapped on the market or no install cost. Having your cake and eating it on both counts means someone is making a big loss and that's never sustainable. We also must be careful not to start introducing price-points that are loss-making for the sake of land-grabbing as this is anti-competitive behaviour and we're acutely aware of avoiding this sort of thing. You could opt for the standard non-introductory offer which is the same price as the ISP you mentioned and we'll waive installation fee...

I completely understand where you guys are coming from and the fact that im speaking to the CEO one on one in a public
forum has already checked numerous positive boxes.

Just to clarify, if i do go with this offer.
it would be R1680 for my first month with CW for 20mbit?

I honestly do all I can to go the extra mile for our customers. Many will attest to the fact that I'll randomly join in on a live chat query as well if I have the time and happen to be monitoring the support staff chats taking place, or randomly respond to a ticket on the desk. It means the support guys never know when I'm watching and when I'm not, so they perform as if I am omnipresent at all times. :D

So yes, that would be your first month to cover the install (we simply pass that cost on by the way - we add no margin on for admin on our end at all). Thereafter R679.00 for fully symmetric 20Mbps fibre.

Below are the speeds from one of our customers on 50Mbps. It's both the cheapest and we're renowned for operating the best network on DSL. Below is on fibre. We really have made these introductory offers the best in the market to really showcase fibre's potential and allow customers to go as fast as their budget can realistically handle.

DJ... You just got yourself a new customer.
Will sign up as soon as Vuma finishes installing on Monday afternoon.

Keep a spot open for me :)
Thank you

It's true. I talked to dj once on live chat. When he introduced himself I became a giggly teenage girl

Ah yes, the giggling teenage girl chats. Those are fun...:D

Lovely to hear and I'm quite certain that you won't be disappointed.

Welcome to Crystal Web. Get 5 others to sign up and I'll make your first month free including the R999 install fee - this applies to anyone by the way. Just have them talk to us on live chat after signing up to provide your name manually as Vumatel doesn't allow us to add custom fields to their own sign up forms...

Webafrica use the IS news server. Never heard of a proprietary WA news server before. As Crystal Web we are exploring making our premium news server available on the Vumatel accounts as well, and we may in the near future, but for now it's only one standard news server.

Crystal Web is unshaped no FUP for the introductory offerings...
Thanks for all the information DJ. Really highly appreciated.

Until recently I was a Web Africa ADSL customer so I can vouch for their news server which is distinct from IS. I also confirmed with them on Friday that their fibre customers would have access to it.

Based on current prices, I would recoup the Crystal Web setup charge in month 9 based on the price differential, so the initial setup cost is not a huge factor.

What is relevant to my decision is:
1. Would your premium news server ever become available on the fibre accounts?
2. If so, in what sort of time frame?
3. If so, free or at what additional cost (given that there are costs involved for you)
4. Regarding VOIP, at what sort of price point?

You really do have an excellent reputation on MBB and the involvement on the forum is amazing, so those are serious plus points for Crystal Web.

As I posted elsewhere, if I were on the CW introductory fibre pricing I would happily pay extra for a premium news server. The value is that good.

Well news.wa.co.za resolves to the standard IS news server. It's just a DNS redirect entry in their zone file, so is there another news server they're offering other than this one? To the best of my knowledge Crystal Web remains the only ISP in the country to offer a free premium news server for free on DSL products, and actually offers 2 news servers for fastest local speeds and best retention and catchment of source material...

1. Would your premium news server ever become available on the fibre accounts?

Maybe. Those introductory accounts are being offered at a steal. We have to be careful considering the low price-point what we offer for free...

3. If so, free or at what additional cost (given that there are costs involved for you)

If it were to be offered at a cost, that cost would be very cheap. Cheaper than buying it from another provider...

4. Regarding VOIP, at what sort of price point?

In the region of around 60c/min cellular and 45c/min other with a standard monthly access fee bundled with a tel number...

You really do have an excellent reputation on MBB and the involvement on the forum is amazing, so those are serious plus points for Crystal Web.

Thank you for the lovely feedback. I sincerely do appreciate it...

At this point I would say you need to give CW a change. Im not going to do it now, but you can be the experimentand let us know how it goes

There is also the 1gig line available

It's a silly speed for an immature market. You'll not see that speed realised in reality, and whacking 1Gbps capacity spikes on the network is atrocious for network management. Until average speeds increase, that will be an anomaly speed that could potentially cause network related problems when in use attempting to demand full link utilisation. It's taking the full port speed even as it moves into the core network. It means wild spikes that require running up to 1Gbps headroom spare on the network capacity "just in case". Else you let it feed from spare resources and basically the client won't obtain those speeds he's paying for and will no doubt complain. We're getting there though, and it will mature soon...

True, it is not really necessary atm. But it is an option

DJ, how long is the introductory offer running for? Will upgrades/downgrades be possible from those accounts? (Staying with cw, considering 12 month contract)

I'm getting vuma installed on weds and am in same boat as OP!

It is very limited in terms of set quantities but we may throw in a few more here and there depending on uptake. Wednesday will be cutting it very fine if I'm honest but I will keep you guys up to date.

Upgrades are possible, but the contract is for the base package for 12 months to secure the special price. Think about it this way: if you expect of Crystal Web that we lock-in the price at these rates without question, then likewise we expect that you're locked in at a minimum amount per month. We both win...

It is, yes. And if anyone wants it they can talk to me about it. Still not convinced that the cost vs benefit is there though considering it will fluctuate in speeds from spare bandwidth pools, and there is no way to maintain any sort of QoE on this without charging exorbitant amounts per month. 1Gbps business where the bandwidth is guaranteed costs about 30 times current retail there. So expect around up to 30:1 variable contention if a provider is offering it uncapped...

Sounds like to your bait is working a little too well! Since I can't order until vuma installs (portal), is there any way to secure an account before Wednesday? 50/50 intro offer.

I would also like to know... standing in the queue, waving arms for @DJ... 's attention

It is, I'm afraid, a first come first served situation on the intro offers. Doesn't mean it will be the only round of specials...:D
