Fibre data usage per month

most of my data usage is from streaming, I have bloomberg TV open on another pc generally the entire day and it uses a GB an hour depending on the res it selects

its quite easy to consume a TB on a fibre line without actually downloading anything.

Hello Jakes147

Please provide proof that my isp is loosing money from me using 2TB's of data on there network?
I'm not Jakes, but I can tell you right now he's right.

Its always been like that really (same story ADSL side and to a lesser extent 3G etc). ISP price their products with reasonably thin margins & assume that people won't use more than X (will vary). End result is that all the heavy users are loss-makers for the ISP (most of mybb). The model only really works because somewhere out there is a grandmother that only uses 1.5gb a month & counterbalances it.

You'll never get "factual information" on this - ISPs guard that data carefully so nobody knows where the threshold lies but its there and its certainly way below 2TB. ;) e.g. Look at my previous post (Note - I posted this before this argument started...was an unrelated comment that has become relevant now)

Interestingly from the pricing & packaging its obvious my ISP doesn't really expect anyone to use >1TB.
Note the "anyone" - denoting the top user, not the start of loss making, which (wild thumbsuck) is probably round the 500gb mark depending on usage patterns (remember ISPs buy capacity not data, so someone using 10 gig during peak is way more harmful to them than someone using 20 during off peak).

Not saying stop downloading...hey to each his own...just want to highlight that jakes does have a point on the loss making.

We must also remember that the most expensive piece has always been the Telkom IPC with the international piece being relatively cheap in comparison. That means the ISPs can offer a lot more for less while still making the same amount of profit. Also, if the content is local (most of steam, popular YouTube etc) it would be extremely cheap for them to provide it on a fiber line, the infrastructure is already there.

Fibre provider: Century City Connect
Fibre isp: ATEC
Fibre connection speed: 5mb Down 5mb Up.
Usage per month: 170 GB
Cost for your package per month: R598

They must be making a killing considering fibrehoods can do 100mb/50mb for roughly the same price.

I am considering changing if they don't update their prices.

ISP Afrika = 20 MB R799
Cybersmart Lightspeed = 200 Mbps R899 (Capped 200 gig day 1000 gig Night)

Amobia = was with them, service started deteriorating (asked them for their pricelist numerous times - no feedback)
Smart Village = cannot find their prices on their site
Comtel Communications = cannot find their prices on their site

Hello Everyone

I thought it would be a good idea to do a thread like this one

Please state the following below:

Fibre provider: Fiberhoods
Fibre isp: cool ideas
Fibre connection speed: 100mb Down 75mb Up.
Usage per month: 2TB +-
Cost for your package per month: R1999

THis makes me sad.

My ADSL Line with telkom (20mb vdsl) is +- R800 a month.
My Data with Vox is R2500 a month.

I could save money and get so much more. Why can't I get Fiberhood

:(:(:(:(

In fact. Maybe I'm missing something obvious.

Do I have any options better than paying R3.5 k a month for 20mb vdsl in blairgowrie?

...and its symmetrical. 200Mbps up.

That cost didn't disappear though - whether you're paying Telkom for IPC or paying the bank back for that massive loan you needed to roll out the fibre is much of a same-ness really.

How is someone paying R2000 to use 2TB uncapped worse that say me using 2TB @ R1400 capped? I mean, its a package offered.
It is indeed the package thats offered & you'd certainly be entitled to use all of it...doesn't change the fact that even the 2TB package is priced under the assumption that the average user will not use 2TB & thus by extension anyone that does use the full amount loses them money.

Nothing wrong with that - hell I know I'm a loss making customer myself (on cellphones anyway).

Yes, but the cost is reduced by a fair amount. My point was that the amount of data that would push you over most FUPs would be higher. It could be that you have to hit 70% utilization permanently internationally or something for them to be losing money. We don't know it yet. It could be that 2TB is a normal amount of data to use according to the company selling him the fiber line.

Is it? The fact that they're only rolling out fibre in selective areas where the numbers work tells me its not all that cheap...

The international will be contended 20+ so more like <5% utilisation.

1.They roll out in selected areas due to those areas being sure places of take-up. And my point is not that the installation is high in cost, once it is installed it costs them virtually nothing to keep it running, the joy of fiber.
2. My point is that we do not know the values, I was going extreme for that reason.

Have to sign a 24 month contract or pay R2,500 installation cost. May have to pay another R999 for their wi-fi router. (A bit broke atm...)

sent an enquiry anyway. :D

I emailed Cybersmart, no reply. Then I pm'd the Cybersmart rep here....got a email the next day saying they are looking into it. That was 3 days ago.

This leaves me wondering about this company.

These are the same guys that used to advertise a 384 Kbps account as 384 KBps (8x difference) on Cape Talk. When I complained their answer was that it would only run a few more months and they don't want to redo the voice over. I've also been inside their offices and wasn't impressed.

Will never do business with them.
