Fibre in Edgemead/Bothasig

Update:
10 days later and I'm still waiting for my router to be delivered by Afrihost. They say there has been a delay and I was meant to get it early this week (it's now Thursday).
In terms of speed/throttling/shaping, I have noticed a slow down between roughly 8pm and 9pm where download speeds can come down to a crawl of ~25KiB/s. Services such as Google, YouTube seem unaffected at these times though. I also at one stage had a DNS issue - the Afrihost DNS servers appeared to be down. I resolved this temporarily by changing my DNS lookup IP's to Google's 8.8.8.8.
If the slowdowns keep up, I'm probably going to jump ship as there are other cheaper offers with potentially better service on the market.

I'm with CyberSmart and besides the high upfront installation cost, I'm very happy with everything - haven't seen any slowdowns - speedtests have all been quite consistent.

Any idea when the fibre is going to be ready in Bothasig?

Apparently they will start lighting up somewhere mid to end May. Then another 2 to 3 weeks and they will contact you with a appointment to install. If you have a pre-order in that is.

Ok, so I am in Bothasig and Vuma team has phoned me to ask when they could come do my install. Arranged for Wednesday (9 May 2018). Things are very well on track.

Most of Bothasig is now live hooray! Now just need to start chasing to arrange an installation date skillet sooo jealous that you have a date already!

Which side of Bothasig are you? I'm in Combrinck Street, curious to know which areas they are starting first. I also pre-ordered mine.

I dunno what happened to the guy promoting optic networks in this thread, but she’s vanished.

Nothing via email either. I even logged a ticket on their website to which I’ve had no response. Pity, was hoping to go with them instead of cool ideas.

A comment about opticnetworks posted today on FB:

sadly I got into Opticnetworks and it was disastrous!
Got 20/20 but could not upload to any international sites
All Chris could say is they don’t guarantee WiFi on fibre-
Wouldn’t phone to discuss - please plug in network ( what to a cell phone!!)
Does not have weekend service-
Drove round to his house
Car was there but would not answer door bell-
Won’t cancel activation with Vumatel so I have to re order a new Vumatel box or wait 30 days
Absolutely arrogant to try and discuss anything amicably I’ve phone!!
Will report to authorities or ombudsman
Or Hello peter!
Now that I’ve seen all other complaints I’m not surprised

ok, seemed to good to be true. I also checked out their FB page.

I wanted to give them a chance, but I will be going with Cool Ideas rather.

Wef 31 May 2018 Opticnetworks will no longer be an ISP on the Vumatel network. Their clients will need to find a new ISP.

Just received that email.

This is not on. And the client just need to shut up and pay the new connection fee.....

Check with Dale Bredenkamp @ Buzybuy. He has a special going till the end of May.

Totally agree. What the actual F happened there?

One man operation that just didn’t work out?

The whole December incident where the internet went down for a week and him not having the common courtesy to respond to anyone’s messages, answer his phone or update anyone plotted out what has just happened...
