Hoyt Crescent resident here.

Three weeks ago the Huawai guys rang my neighbors doorbell to install the last mile fiber from the pole where the 48 fiber cable is, to my house or at least the pole in my yard. The neighbors were not there. They said they would be back the next day so I arranged to be available to help them get into both yards. I have not seen or heard from them again. Three weeks....

I see that I posted here end of March that Webafrica said fiber would be available within 3 months. It later just changed to "soon". It feels like that ETA is moving backwards.

When I check online for availability now it also gives me the preorder option. But when you get to the next page it says "amount due now", even though they state you dont have to pay yet.

Another big issue is that Webafrica has a double data promotion on at the moment. And the packages online are being sold at the doubled data rate. So after 2 months you get half the data that you signed up for for the same price. They need to hire smarter marketing people.

I just don't trust ISPs anymore. I have read too many horror stories of ISP taking money from people who order without providing the service. Webafrica included.

I would love to get some feedback and actual dates from them.

Hi

One of my friends went through the whole thing with Webafrica, on the site it says that his area is read for Fibre (also Moreleta Park) and that he can apply. 1-Webafrica_fibre
1-Webafrica_fibre.jpeg

Then after some time he received this mail. No money has been deducted from his account yet. 2-Webafrica_Signup

I have asked Telkom on Twitter yesterday and the feedback was that they can't give specific timelines at this stage.
Best idea might be to stop when we see one of the Huawai guys who is splicing fiber if they can give us a date of when the "project" should be complete as they would have a better idea then the guys pulling the fiber.

Hey,
Just an FYI.

Check openserve coverage map! Quite a big chunk of the Telkom Fibre in the area has gone live. Especially all along Timbavati Street.

NO! Still nothing in Jacques street.
But I don't think it will be long now.

Hey guys I am moving into a complex in Helios street in September,
as far as I can tell there is nothing there yet, and because we are renting I do not see any way we can get anything new installed.
does anyone know if there is a decent alternative in that area?

Apparently the fiber in our area is now available so my order is in with Webafrica. I'll update here as and when things progress.

In which street are you? Does it show available on the openserve map?

Hi,

I'm in Meadow Glen Estate, I've ordered my Fibre line on Tuesday, got a call back from Telkom yesterday with an appointment to install next week Tuesday (23rd), so that will be a 1 week turnaround time. I've taken up a contract with them directly (I know it is more expensive, but as expected it did speed up the process it seems)

Will keep you posted.

I was wondering if Telkom would give preference to those installations where you have taken a contract with them and I think you've confirmed that.

I just ordered today from Webafrica (I am in Wekker/Jozini) and estimated time is 4-8 weeks unfortunately. Please update how the installation goes and what speeds you're getting.

I'm in Hoyt Crescent. I used the Webafrica page to view the availability. It use to say you can get fiber soon but now it says you can get fiber and provides a order page.

It did show dark purple on the Openserve map as well.

Looking on Telkom's website, I see the entry level Fibre offering (10mb) is the one that includes 50Gb.

I already have the VOX Fatpipe special that was on last year, which I am very happy with, so I just want the Telkom Fibre LINE and nothing else from them. Anybody know where I can see pricing for ONLY THE FIBRE on Telkom's site?

I guess they are trying to force people to buy Telkom data as well. Tsk.

Oh yeah, and if one gets the line and modem, will the Telkom fibre modem allow me to connect to Vox, or are the locked somehow?

Thanks!

Axxess offers fibre lines without data packages. I doubt that the Vox Fatpipe accounts will work over a fibre line, although I can't say for sure.

Just enter erasmus kloof or another telkom area and the prices will show.

Hey Moreleta Park-dwellers

Now that Moreleta Park is in "planned" status on the OpenServe/Telkom FTTH coverage map, you may want to have a browse through this thread. It's more general (Telkom-based FTTH in Pretoria) but has loads of info, tips and early user FTTH experiences. Enjoy!

Try this post for starters:
PS : Regardless of whether you're in an estate or a free-standing house, the second attachment ("Telkom More Information.pdf") has a couple of sketches that give good guidance on how to provide a proper access duct from the boundary of your property into the house.

I got phoned by a guy from Telkom and he arranged to come and do the install for me today. It was sooner than I expected (two weeks after I placed the order with Webafrica) so I was cautiously optimistic.

The guys came with Telkom and Openserve bakkies and pulled through the last bit of fiber from the poles to my house and did the patching etc. When they tested it they found that the fiber is not active and that needs to be done by the cables department in Telkom.

They can't give me an ETA on when that might be because there is a strike within Telkom so it might be anything from 3 days to 3 months.

I'll revert back to being unexcited until the next call comes.

The big issue is that every time I have to take off from work to be at home and be available while they work. They also cant arrange to do it later in the afternoons because if there are issues like this connection issue they have to talk to people in the offices who wont be available too late.

But I guess this is nothing new. Its what we have to endure for the end result. It would have been awesome if I could have let you all know that I now have a fiber connection up and running but for now its: To be continued.....

I'm in the same boat (Moreleta Park), fibre installation was done last week Wednesday, when tested they indicated that it is not patched at the exchange, I however had no feedback from the technician since then. Actually very frustrating as I have all the equipment from them set up already, ready to go but need patching!!

Update on my install. A very positive one at that.

Got a call yesterday that the the Telkom guys are at my gate. Ofc when I was at work and it would take me about an hour to get home. But I got there and they started troubleshooting the issue.
Turns out the initial installer spliced the fibre in the wrong direction. As in not towards the exchange but towards the end of the cable. Its something I can understand could happen. They pretty much need to stick to procedure and always place incoming cables on the left and outgoing on the right or something like that. Anyway installation practice tangent aside.

It worked and was tested with the Telkom modem they had there. I now just need the modem from Webafrica. They said they would be in contact within 24 - 48 hours but I might make a nuisance of myself and just bug them continuously until I have it.

All in all, so far I have been keeping myself from getting to excited and have been pleasantly surprised by much quicker service than was expected. I'll make another post once I have the modem and have done a speed test.

I assume the Telkom guys left the Huawei ONT (Optical Network Terminal) in place ?
If so, you can already test/use your connection my making a PPPoE connection from a PC - you don't have to wait for the WebAfrica router.
If you've already given the Telkom 'circuit number' to WebAfrica, they can issue you with your username/password details (PPPoE login) and you can use those to connect.
