Fibre pricing: SA vs Africa

That's awesome. Other African places have cheaper fibre than us.

I was chatting to an ISP ceo a while back, and he reckons the only way we'll really get cheap fibre is for DFA or someone similar to go bankrupt, and sell their assets @ 10c on the rand. Even then, its not looking rosy.

they've spent too much laying down the infrastructure, and cant recoup costs @ low rates

It seems South Africa only has private enterprises where the other countries have government/utility assistance. I thought Telkom was laying fibre as well?

I think Telkom has already laid its fibre over the last 20 years or so...

How is one going to recoup costs @ zero revenue?

agree fully. But, if they dont drop their costs, they'll eventually go bankrupt from lack of income, and hopefully then the assets can be sold for a fraction of the outlay costs

One of these days an african country will explode and become the digital hub of africa. Hope it's us.

It's true however most of Telkom fibre were installed between their core sites and there is very few addressing the last mile needs. It's only recently as part of the MSAN rollout where the fibre footprint is extending beyond the exchanges...

Government created jobs... That is all they are interested in... Either through government fibre installations or private companies getting the fibre contracts by being beee and employing expensive labour compared to machine trench digging etc.

This is why fibre/internet is so expensive here.

Look at the latest article about the pig in Durban who gtr a billion plus contract for fibre rollout that DID NOT go out to tender and this a$$hat knows NOTHING about telecoms.

Again, all the government is going to parade is the masses of new jobs created to do the installation.

ALL the above illustrates, is expensive fibre being put into the ground THAT NO ONE CAN AFFORD to buy into and resell !!!
