Fibre: Secunda Community

I know somebody has put blue dotted lines all over the road throughout suburbs in Jhb, but not sure what it is about. also not sure if it is related.

This is just what I dont understand... They are doing a high-level feasability.... why? Their fibre is just laying here, not being used at all, they spent millions to get it here, but are not willing to get money for it? I understand that it is extra expense to them to trench to the homes, but still they could get money back from it, that they are losing out on now. Hoping that the fibre would sprout roots and dig up some coal or gold?

We have 221 signups already, that is nice to see it is growing. We will get there.

They probably have around 20-30kms of "backbone". Which means they need to do around 170kms (my quick estimate using google maps, I haven't bothered to calculate more exact numbers) more to cover Secunda streets.

Don't know what their reasoning for the original fibre was, that was before FTTH really became a thing in SA, but the "Expansion" will still cost around R100 mil. They probably want to get better numbers so they know whether they will invest.

I've had a discussion with Frogfoot as well who may have a more "built it and they will come" approach. There are factors affecting this as well, but good information so far I will be keeping channels open with them.


Guys please remember, even if a provider starts today you will probably only be connected end of the year or early next year.
This will take time, please continue spreading the word. I will keep working to get this going.

Wow, ok. Blairgowrie is about 97km of trenching, and we required 1300 homes to get fibre. You are essentially double that amount of distance, and then not near the major hubs in SA, so my guess is about 3000 homes would be needed.
 
ive been hounding DFA on their twitter, to the point they followed me and IT GOES DOWN IN THE DM lol

they should have an answer about monday, if we can get the complexes and green area keen that should go a long way to helping

The contact person at DFA did update me, they are still busy as I mentioned in my earlier post. They started their feasibility after I approached them.

PJ would you then like to handle the communication for the initiative? It will help to have another person.
Have you spoken with any Body corporates?
I do have a contact for Umuzi and some of the complexes I got from The Bulletin people so far, but I haven't had time to follow up yet. Still need to visit some complexes as well to discuss with people.

Frogfoot representative will be coming to Secunda in April as well to discuss some things.

That's not great. Also no uncapped.
I don't see that they have an open network with many ISPs

I was under the impression the idea was to go out to various companies and see what they have to offer. We've already jumped onto one and got burned.

Seems like it's back to free for all. I guess I'll still keep the site up for a while and discuss again with Frogfoot and DFA to see what they say since they seemed interested so far.
 
No we are not back to ffa. Hawky still runs the FTTH show, we give him support. I for one dont see the Cybersmart thing pan out. There is no formal communication about this. I will wait for conformation and all the fineprint to sign up. I cant see them requiring only 12-17 sighups when the rest wants 1000+. There is a catch.
