Is this box inside? Up to where does the fibre go?

Generally the fibre comes from the street, trenched into your property, and along a wall and into your house (similar to how telephone or security system cabling enters your house). It then connects to our network box which is mounted on whatever wall you like, in whatever room you like :D

Our Telkom (dead) line comes in from the back where they have poles mounted. If this comes in from the street it would need to run along the entire width of the house. I have a wire sticking out behind me here that you could use to pull fibre though. :p :twisted:

I believe our network box has one gigabit-ethernet port, but I will have to confirm and get back to you.

To answer your question.. Yes, unfortunately on a router with a theoretical max throughput of 40mb/s all data would be limited to 40mb/s, even though the local data on our paid packages would able to transfer at a gigabit. It would be a bit of a waste to use that router, especially if you were on Gigabit 100 or Gigabit MySpeed (with international > 40mbit). If you were on our Gigabit 10 package it wouldn't be too bad, as international would run at 10mbit, and local would run at 40mbit.

What kind of router are you talking about though? When you say 40mbit, are you referring to a VDSL router? That is different. Your VDSL line may be limited to 40mbit, but that doesn't matter. The ethernet ports would be either 100mbit or even 1 gigabit. Still, if this were the case, you would be fine with your international speeds, and your local would run at 100mbit, worst case scenario. Telkom's Pace VDSL router would be perfect to use, because it has a gigabit EWAN port, 4 gigabit ethernet ports, and 300mbps wifi (don't worry about the VDSL part).

Thanks. Was just using random numbers, no specific router in mind when posting that. One more question... hows the recruiting going? Cant imagine there is a abundance of fibre technicians around Secunda =/
 
though I believe a router does not act as a switch in that sense. it only routes the internet from the input port(RJ11/R45) to the 4 or 8 LAN ports. I don't think if you connect the router to the network box with one of the normal lan ports it would distribute the connection. as far as i know routers are not designed to do that.

I may be wrong. I have never attempted a connection setup such as that ..it's only theoretical

I would strongly suggest a gigabit switch and wireless AP setup to avoid complex setup scenarios

If I understand correctly the network box installed by 123Net acts as the *router* which handles the protocols and such which allows you to connect your PC to it directly. a router's job is usually to convert signals from the ISP to understandable language in order for the OS to be able to use it to connect to the net

Us IT guys will most likely play around with it and see what we can configure and what we can't

Since as I understand it their box acts as the modem (not sure but I think fibre does not need the analog to digital conversion since it can transport a digital signal), so you can connect your pc directly to the box, but if you want wireless or more devices ( 2 computers etc.) connected to their network, you will need a router/wifi router to route the data/traffic to said devices.

That is how I understand it, please correct me if I am wrong.

In South Africa they sell routers as one device, it is both a modem and a router.
What you should ask for is an Access Point, it is just a router, it does not contain modem technology and is usually quite a bit cheaper due to this.

Also, not all routers/modems are able to act in bridge mode, they do not have the port required to allow one to plug in a cable that would be the information it had to broadcast/transfer.

Now that we know what 123net gives us it makes it a bit easier. It seems there is still a bit of confusion. I'll try to explain for those who are not sure. I'm not going to go into technical details, this is an attempt to simplify.

To start, let's look at how one connects to the internet (3G/dialup/ADSL/fibre/whatever). You need:

  1. A Modem (To convert "internet signals" to "local signals")
  2. Something to "Dial" the modem (Think of 56k days) - Let's call this the "Dialer" further in this post

That's the most basic setup. Some devices integrate this. A typical ADSL "router" is actually a modem+router("dialer") in one.

Let's break it down for 123net fibre.

Modem: 123NET provides and installs their modem. So you are set on this front.

Dialer: You have some options here:
  • PC: Connect your PC directly* to the modem with the Ethernet (LAN) cable. Your PC acts as the "dialer" which establishes the connection (similar to your 3G dongle or old dialup).
  • Router: Connect the modem directly* to a compatible# router. The router acts as the dialer which establishes the connection This is similar to most ADSL setups (also think about ADSL routers which have a USB port for 3G - They "dial" the modem)

*Directly: This does NOT mean a single cable MUST go from the modem into the device. You can have an Ethernet switch in between. (The way a network works, this is acceptable)

#Compatible router: The router needs an ewan port. i.e. One of the "LAN" ports can be used as a "WAN" port so that the router can communicate with the modem (The router needs to know that you want to use an external modem and that it's connected to a certain port). You'll have to check your manual or website to see whether your router supports this.

&Note: An access point is not a router. Access points are used to create a wifi network. In typical "Wifi Routers" the access point is integrated in the router. Stand-alone access points only serve to build or extend the wifi network and do not provide "routing" (dialing) capabilities.

In summary, for most users the following will apply:
  • If you have multiple devices you will need a router (Easiest is probably to get a 123net one)
  • If you only have one PC, you don't need a router

There are other scenarios which involve ICS or proxy via a PC acting as a router or multiple sessions from different devices (Similar to using an ADSL modem only or using a router in "bridging/modem only" mode). I will not go into this, if you know how to use this or are currently using this then this guide is probably not for you or PM me ;)

I hope this sheds some light on what you need. If you think I missed something post, then I will see if I can still edit my post.

If you are taking the gigabit local option you might want to invest in an 802.11ac router (your devices have to support it though).
Also just a comment to the Access Point, for most consumers it is a router/wireless access point being the same thing. Didn't want to confuse as they are usually integrated together (actually have never purchased one where it wasn't integrated).

Do you have an ac network? I read about the performance a while back, curious how a "real person" finds it.

I'll probably stick with n (on 2.4GHz). Most of my stuff is wired and I use the wifi for phone/tablet and the occasional laptop with activity that will not saturate the network. (Also the time in the ceiling space pulling wires needs to be justified :P )

Have one in Europe at my uncle's and then again at my grandparents. Their internet connections are 500Mbps/150Mbps.
AC is really good for my uncle due to it being on the 5Ghz range, get about 80MB/s through multiple walls even with the interference from the rest of the apartments. Huge difference from before with the n class where he got about 10MB/s going into the next room. (EDIT: those walls are cardboard like things though)

In my house I am using n class, plug in the devices for gigabit transfer if I am moving files. 2 of my laptops are 802.11ac compatible.

EDIT: But the other side of the coin: get about 30MB/s at my grandparents place due to walls/the router. You need to get one that can do multiple bands, your laptop has to support it as well.

Ac routers are backwards compatible with b g n as well ey. Unless you set the router to ac only connections

No, what I meant is that your device has to be compatible with ac or it is wasted money. Ac is a lot more expensive than n class routers.

That's not a lie..this is why id rather go the gigabit switch and wireless Ac Ap combo. Aps are cheaper than routers
 
End of august. Not too long now till fibre heaven. @123net rep, what routers do you supply with the contracts?
