Fibre: Secunda Community

Ok so I bit the bullet and ordered my line. Got a bunch of emails from them with the latest one stating they will contact me for a installation appointment. Dont know when that will be, but at least the race is started, now we wait patiently for them to do their magic.

My friend send me pictures of 3xcom laying Fibre in his street right in front of his house but he does not stay in the phase 1 area so how they are doing it is anyone's guess.

Which street was that? I have heard they are going around begemann str. I apparently am in their 1st phase section but havent seen any installation. I think they misrepresented phase 1 with it rather being north of OR Thambo is my guess.

I think it is Lindley. I see they are near the English High School.

apparently they are also doing some cabling work around clare street as well so I figure the phase 1 area is north of OR thambo str but will take quite some time to get it all installed.

I dont know precisely how they will handle the installations, but make sure you sign up on vodacom fibre website if you are interested. Make sure to read all the terms and conditions and read up on the FUP's as well. Please dont go into things blindly. I am not sure if they will install fibre to the edge of the property if you did not apply for it, there is still a bunch of unknown info, but also a bunch of info available already.

they dug past my house. have put up a little grey box between every 2 houses.
now its waiting for the installation of the line to the house. no idea when that will be though

Think it is going to be awhile before they will do the neighborhood I live in. Seems they are heading east.

yeah they did move east from me. i am curios how they are going to do the home installations as that gives an idea of time per suburb. for what its worth the trenching has been fast so far. they have trenched a number of kms and thrown a lot of bodies to get it done so they are trying to get through it. they are basically through the length of danie theron and EG Jansen and then south down till roy cambell street. and all in about 1 month or so.

pretty quick considering the distance.

I just moved from PE to Secunda and had Telkom 100meg fibre line with Great speeds and wondefull latencies, now in secunda I see that Vodacom just finished their Fibre infrastructure in my street, little grey box and all at my house...
1: Has anyone have any experience with vodacom?
2: Is there fibre network basically running off their data towers which actually has bad latency or do they have a seperate fibre network that supplies a dedicated fibre capacity?
3: Would other ISP's also be able to use Vodacom's fibre infrastructure or would each ISP need to trench and install their own?

1: Do you mean specifically Vodacom Fibre, or in general?
2: Last year Openserve added fibre 'nodes' around main areas in Secunda (which made it possible for many of us to actually upgrade from 4m DSL to 20m VDSL), also DarkFibre has a few nodes that they put in years ago. So I assume the Vodacom fibre cables are linked up with the Openserve ones at least.
3: Not sure, I would also like to know. For instance, in my area I can get Vox fibre to Business, but no residential fibre lines are installed, so not sure.

As far as my knowledge goes, Vodacom will use the DFA backhaul for their fibre. Vodacom is also not open access so no, if you get Vodacom fibre, you will have to use Vodacom as an ISP, there is how-ever talks about Vodacom going open access so time will tell. Sorry to hear about your loss though, it has to be tough to go from interweb wonderland to interweb hell. But it will change soon. Welcome to Secunda, our stinky Town doesnt suck too much, just stay off the roads on Friday and Saterday nights for your safety.

It's actually the other way around. Their data towers run off their fibre network and it's this fibre network they also use for their residential customers. There's a lot of additional factors in wireless that cause latency.
