I am moving to Rosebank, Cape Town. I have discovered Vumatel is very expensive, so I have the option of either R597 pm 20Mbps down, unknown up with Openserve DSL or R907 pm 20Mbps up and down with Vumatel Fibre.

My question is, is there any disadvantage in choosing DSL over fibre? Will there be a latency difference with DSL?

Even if it turns out that the upload speed is slow, I will not be too concerned as my current flat is 10/5 Mbps fibre and that is sufficient for me. I mainly use the internet for work, a bit of light online gaming (I enjoy being emotionally broken down on the SA DotA servers), and the wife uses it for Netflix.

If stability is a concern (eg work), go for fibre even if it's a bit more expensive.
DSL is a hit or miss. You could be in an area where it's rock solid and well maintained, or absolutely terrible.

I suppose stability is important. It is difficult to have a video call if it keeps cutting out. That is a good point.

DSL is on the way out.. typically, if cables are stolen, Telkom is unlikely to replace it..

Latency is also much higher than fibre..

JustDSL is a service that I would recommend to anyone who wants a great uncapped unshaped unthrottled connection without any FUP. I have 20mbps JustDSL with Axxess and never had a problem - most used in a month was 1.8TB and was never throttled or slowed down. We use it for Netflix, Youtube streaming, XBOX downloading and uploading, smart devices and occasional downloading of large files. But I can say that uploading is limited to 1mbps and if you want to upload large files, I would recommend fiber. Vuma is also in my area, and the reason I do not use them is the price.

Your gaming experience on fibre likely won't be topped by anything else. A DSL connection could possibly be as good if you are close enough to your exchange and your latency is kept to a minimum. If you aren't lucky then I promise you a poor DSL connection will only break you down further. I've just recently come from a nonsense DSL connection of max 10 mbps with 50 ms of latency to my nearest server (should be 18ms if fast path) to a 100 mbps up/down fibre connection. Night and flippen day for gaming. Every other aspect of using the internet is also just perfection.
