Solutions for sharing the road

How much priority should the City of Cape Town give to public transport over private vehicles? Cape Town’s new Integrated Rapid Transit (IRT) system borrows many lessons from Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems in South American cities, where leaders have in some cases been prepared to limit the space available for private vehicles in order to build bus lanes. The assumption was that this would be balanced out as more people used public transport and left their cars at home.

The City of Cape Town has taken a more pragmatic approach, following the principle that the IRT infrastructure should have no lasting impact on the currently available road space, which is too busy as it is. Instead, new lanes are being built in the road reserve, or entirely new roads are being built just for buses on available land. Where these options aren’t available, buses will be required to operate in normal mixed traffic, or share a single lane. So far the City has also avoided expropriating land to expand roadways.

But there are places where simple solutions cannot provide all the answers. One of these is at intersections. In South America, many buses are equipped with wireless sensors that turn traffic lights green so they never have to stop. This can cause long delays for motorists trying to drive across the bus lane and so is not considered an option for Cape Town.

But at the same time, it would be impossible to run a scheduled bus service if buses get locked up for long periods of time at intersections. Instead, Cape Town is preparing to introduce a hybrid system where buses that are running late will trigger a slight variation in the programming of the traffic lights ahead of them. This will help them get through a bit faster without giving them overall priority.

But the problems don’t end there. For intersections to function smoothly, they require additional lanes to separate vehicles that are going forward and vehicles that are turning. This means that there often isn’t space for new bus lanes in the areas before and after intersections. And, where the bus lanes split at an intersection, buses may also require extra turning lanes.

In South American cities, one solution has been to ban vehicles from turning right at intersections along BRT routes, eliminating the need for turning lanes. However this requires rerouting traffic along surrounding roads, and is not really an option in residential areas.

Instead, engineers working on the IRT system have had to come up with customised solutions for sharing the road at each intersection. An example of this is a ‘pre-signal system’, where traffic lights are set up just before an intersection’s turning lanes begin. These lights control the sharing of the turning lanes between buses and cars, and also allow buses to ‘jump the queue’ waiting at the intersection.

Changes like this require significant upgrades to the structure of intersections. The surfaces of intersections also have to be replaced to make the tarmac strong enough for buses to travel on regularly, as is the case on all parts of the road where buses will travel in the same space as cars.

When these upgrades are taking place, Capetonians can expect short-term disruptions in traffic going through intersections on IRT routes, but they can rest assured that in the long run, they are getting the best possible compromise, with the new IRT system set to ease traffic congestion significantly while causing minimal disruption to the existing road space.

Now that I think of it, Vlacke is just giving the media what it wants... negative news, but the part about the training camps are true. LOC really shooting themselves in the foot for not keeping up to date with that issue.
 
incredible. if you don't like soccer and vuvuzelas and hate the idea that there might be a successful WC in your country then so be it. But the need to whinge and be so pessimistic, jumpin onto every piece of scrap news that is not worth the time taken to read and turn it into Doomsday is just sad. As one poster said, the Germans were still painting the morning of the opening game. Did anybody see the pitch at a Premier League game this weekend? deplorable, low grade, worse than any medium soccer club in SA. Yes Zuma is filthy dog, i am not a supporter..and it does not make it rite..but he is not the only one.. take any foreign newspaper headline, turn it into a SA scene and then see how we react..Italian President Berlusconi(sp) barely legal teenage girls walkin round nekkid at his place with the Czech prime minister..can you imagine the thread if that was in SA?? i just think we need to stop beating ourselves up for being SA, we self-loath on such another level..i have an average of 15 foreign visitors every year to cape town and every single one has an amazin time and almost all seriously start lookin at relocating..
 
What exactly are the LOC meant to do if teams do not confirm their base camps? boot them from the WC?

There are hundreds of potential existing sites near to or adjacent to hotels/accommodation.

If Team A goes and picks a base camp that is under construction, well then that is their risk.

With this whole base camp story, most of our private schools and universities have better facilities than some psl stadiums, why didnt they use those?
 
Exactly.. Why risk an entirely new hotel, new fields...and one that is still under construction.

There is hardly a shortage.

Will you be lauging when this fail and above the cost of this you have to pay more taxes to make up for the money they did not get because they failed.

I've already contributed towards a bunch of soccer stadiums that provide no resource to any community (as opposed to other things that money could've paid for, like oh I don't know, houses, water and electrical supplies, hospitals). What's a bit more to see all you sheep having no choice but to admit you were wrong and the whole thing was doomed to be a loss from the start - quality entertainment from my seat! :D From the reaction of people here I can see there is going to be some bitter pride to swallow.
Danny and his pals are laughing all the way to the bank, but you keep right on pretending like anyone else in the country is going to benefit from all this*.

It's a beautiful con really, not quite as smooth and lucrative as say FIA, but I think Fifa deserve however much they're walking away with. It's like asking a bunch of people "Who wants to host a grrrreeat party!?" and then you choose a host... and they have to empty their wallet for the preparations... and then you come in and charge all the guests as if you've got expenses to cover, and piss off leaving the host with handfuls of bills. ;)


*don't even start on about improved roads and airports or whatever, these improvements could've and SHOULD've been made with that taxpayer $$$ in any case
 
Well i can tell you , on the whole production/broadcasting side of the WC , its gonna work, Telkom are on the ball with regards to links to all stadiums bandwidth, redundacy plans u name it ! i work for the host broadcaster HBS . and even the IBC is coming along nicely! i know cause i see it everyday :)
