Why are people mad at Trump? You keep calling him racist and now he’s shown that he’s not by fighting for a black man to represent the US.

What was funny though was how, in the same speech, he claimed to know a lot about sports and a few minutes later said they he didn’t understand what yellow and red cards meant.

And the relevant excuse is just Soccer is not that big in the USA.

It's 5th or 6th sport played by girls.

They had a fairly good tournament and hopefully they will stop playing their fake sports. American football instead of Rugby. Baseball instead of cricket and basketball instead of Soccer and join the rest of the world.

Then they might be a real force.

The US women's football team is the most successful team in the women's game. The women's game is prioritsied at the top high schools and colleges in the US. In terms of team sports, it only competes with volleyball for participation.

For the men, it is nowhere near as popular, even though there is more money in the MLS compared to the women's equivalent. Top male high school athletes are being recruited to play American football, basketball, baseball and even hockey. Then soccer comes along. The top Division 1 colleges in the US don't really care for men's soccer. Kind of like how Paarl Gim, Michaelhouse and Paul Roos pump everything into rugby here and don't care for soccer.

Men's soccer had a surge in popularity around the 1994 World Cup but it wasn't sustained. There is renewed interest in it now, as seen in the explosive growth of the MLS, but it still likely only the 5th most popular sport at best.

Saying all of the above, the US are World Cup regulars and despite the sport being nowhere near a national sport or even having mainstream support, they tend to be competitive. The Balogun BS aside, they made the Round of 16 on merit, getting as far as Brazil. Not even Germany and the Netherlands got as far as they did and Italy haven't qualified for a World Cup in 12-years.

India and China, now there are two nations that should have some explaining to do. Combined 2.8 billion people and only one fortuitous World Cup appearance between them.
