I think i have finally decided on the setup i am getting next month

-Asus P5kC Mobo(Crossfire And DDR2 + DDR3 Compatible) +- R1800
-Q6600 Quad Core Processor +- R1600
-2 x 1 Gig DDR2 1066 Ram +- R400
-ATI HD4850 Graphics Card +- R2000
-Seagate 500 Gig Sata HDD +- R800
-500w PSU AND Case +- R1000

Estimate Total = R7600

What do you think:cool: :p

Looks good (except some parts will be a bit more than your estimates). Where will you be getting your parts?

I would consider getting an X48 or P45 motherboard with Crossfire 16x + 16x (your current mobo is 16x + 4x) if you intend on getting the most out of a Crossfire setup at high resolution. But then you'd have to decide on either DDR2 or DDR3, it seems.
 
For whatever it is worth ... my advice is not to underestimate the importance of a good PSU.

Spend the money now and get a decent one otherwise you will be like me and have to pay again to upgrade (double cost).

Also - forget about getting the DDR3 and DDR2 compatible mobo - not worth the performance increase.
 
Not so much on a budget i just want a board that is DDR3 compatible So when DDR3 does become cheaper im not stuck with the problem i have now of having expensive slow DDR400 Compared to DDR2
 
One thing you may want to add to bring it to a similar setup that I have is a internal flash/memory stick card reader - turns out to be very useful.

Also make sure that for your case the USB's at the front are not vertical directly next to each other - it is a pain in the arse when you work with some flash sticks. Rather get them far apart on your case.

Trust me ... by that time things would have changed so much that you will be in the market for a new mobo again.

I anticipate that the demand for DDR3 will not be that same like the case for DDR400 ... prices will not come down as you expet because the performance benefit is just not there. Chances are that DDR4 will become mainstream with resultant price benefits.

And the Intel Nehalem is arriving soon...

Tricky time to be buying a new PC.
 
well im buying middel of next month but who would have thought it would be such a mission to decide on a setup

it's cheaper

What's the price on that? Could you not get a P45 board for around the same price?
 
The board my be cheaper, but is it worth it for cost of ram?

I'd watch out for psus that come with a case. Unless it's an Antec Case and you're getting an Antec psu. :p

Over time a psus output decreases. With that 4850 and quad core you may be fine now, but in a few months you might get problems.
 
Maybe get a cheap board and put the extra money towards a 4870, seeing as it is only R1300 more?

BTW, what size screen do you have or plan to get?
