So after 4 years of using iphones and recently using the iPad gen 1 and gen 2 I decided to drop windows and get myself an iMac, all I can say is why did it take me so long to make the move. Still trying to work out a few things but loving every second of it.

If anyone has any suggestions of must-have apps and prgrammes please can you let me know. Thanks in advance for the info.

Wait until the thing breaks and you need support from Core. I was just burned by this, this weekend. I will never purchase another Apple product while in South Africa. Not worth it!

Right, where to start?
You'll find there are arguments for either iWork or Office for Mac... I'm an iWork kinda guy and there is the benefit of being able to sync Pages, Numbers and Keynote across all your iDevices (as well as saving in .doc, .xls or .pst formats).
For photos and video you already have iPhoto and iMovie but when the time comes, Apeture and Final Cut are excellent.
Get yourself AppFresh to keep apps up to date, CleanMyMac for system maintenance. Calibre for books, Cyberduck or ClassicFTP for FTP, Gimp for graphics, Micro Video Converter to convert video for your devices, Stuffit or The Unarchiver for zip or rar files, Speed Download to manage downloads, Unison for newsgroups, Transmission for torrents, 1Password remembers passes and logins, Flip4Mac and Perian for wmv playback in QuickTime... There are some really cool ones like DaisyDisk, Delicious Library, CandyBar, Fontcase, Pixelmator and on and on and on... It can get a little expensive if you load up on everything at once. Get what you need now and add as you go.
Have fun with that Mac now ya hear. ;)

Linux is closer to MacOS than windows it. Better imo.

Maybe in terms of look and the underlying core...but Mac is as closed as a clay donkey's ass...in Linux you can pretty much change anything...Windows is more limited but imo Mac is the winner for "Sorry that's not possible".

Oh... ok.

I also changed a couple of years back best decision I ever made was dumping windows. Don't you just love how you install or delete apps?

First, let me put my tongue firmly in my cheek, then let me respond by saying: yeah, every time I fire up Terminal I'm amazed by how much I can't change on my Mac. Finally, let me just smile and move on...

Congrats... The following are a few sites that should help you find most of the apps you might need, (but don't forget to look at the App store as well):

If you're a gamer, then remember you can always set up dual boot with bootcamp (boot into OSX or Windows), many of the mac users, generally access Windows via a virtual machine (Oracle Virtualbox, Parallels, VMWare Fusion) -- which is good for most things, except Windows gaming...

If however you'd like to explore the gaming on Mac I suggest you look at (more than enough for most):

You think the move from Windows to Mac to a move TOWARDS Linux? :wtf:

Well I suppose you're right. Some people may swap the mac/windows thing around like this: mac-> windows -> linux but I don't like to go there, you know what these apple fanboys are like.

Linux imo is great for servers (use them daily) -- tried as a desktop and found it to be too restrictive re apps (hence my desktop preference for OSX).
Btw the mess with Ubuntu & Gnome 3 has not helped their plight.
