What’s wrong with marriage, gentlemen? I’m unmarried so I have no experience on this subject.

Oh my comment was said firmly tongue in cheek.
But I think if you look at the stats and the biggest causes for not having enough money later in life it's divorce, cashing in pensions and for the life of me can't remember the others. Probably having kids.

Some good advice on this topic, thanks to all.

My mistakes are:
* Bought a new car early in my career. At least I've not repeated the mistake and we are still driving that car after 17 years.
* Not diversifying investments early on in life and thinking that an employer's pension and Sanlam RA will do.
* Concentrating too much on paying off debt when interest rates were low. Could have invested more in shares.
* Leaving further studies for too late. Try to constantly improve yourself, even if it's a short course every 2 years.
