Financial Mistakes

Have you made a financial decision in the past that you regret today? Any experience that we can hopefully learn from is welcome.
bought not one, but two BMWs with a lot of debt, learned too late in life that it's plain stupid to buy a car that you can't afford to buy cash

lately ... well I have an amount that's big enough for me to lose sleep over stuck in what now seems to have been a scam

then there was an evening many years ago where I spent over R4k on strippers ... no regrets about that one!

One mistake but I don't regret it: the party high life in my 20s, I was earning quite a lot quite early. I'd have a paid house by now but I really don't regret it, it taught me a lot, I had fun, I would do it again, I'm not trying to build a financial empire and don't intend on having kids so I don't care about legacy.

Two things I had no input in and I would definitely have liked not having:
1. Deadbeat father with huge ups and huge downs (going from rockstar lifestyle to virtually homeless) using emotional blackmail and family pressure to get financial help: it has cost me fortunes.

2. Cancer. Despite my medical aid paying millions over the year (and they've been amazing and consistent), you never plan or expect that. And the copayments can be hectic on new drugs, but they worked amazingly and MA paid 80%+ already. Even if I live til 100yo, they'll never make a cent of profit from me.

Even at R10k I had a chance to invest... was a fool not too.
yeah but you cant look back and think that. it will drive you mad. one could have jumped into any stock and didnt, apple, uber etc. back when BTC was 10k it was still a speculative gamble and even now, who knows where it will go. for all we know it ends up at 1kkUS$ in the next two years.

Medical aid and amazing in the same sentence . please tell us who they are

Not pulling out.

I mean crypto.

I sat on a small fortune in one of the early runs but my mind was elsewhere.

Discovery:

- they paid up to 80k a month (3year at least on 80k/month + stem cell transplant + 1 month hospital in own room + about 2 months hospital on and off in shared rooms) over 5 year+

- Never had a claim they refused to pay.

- Had 1 or 2 claims where I challenged the copayment (and small amounts, not the big ones), was solved in 2/3 days to my benefit.

- Paid consistently for a new drug not approved in SA (so they have no duty to accept paying for it) and paying 100% up to 400k/year and after 400k they pay 80% without any limit.

- Authorisations approved within 1/2 day without any discussion even on complex treatments.

So no, basically I'm very happy with them.

I know plenty of horror stories, have heard plenty of people complaining, but it just hasn't been my experience.

That's amazing. Super happy for you and all the best on the road to recovery

Maybe a swap. Can trade pics in DM. What special functions does your wife perform and what year model? Any upgrades?
She cooks for me twice a day. As far as upgrades go, the boobies have been enlarged. Your offer - special features and upgrades? If it checks out we can trade pics and close the deal. She can fly anywhere in the country within 24 hours

Thanks, I'm in remission now so hopefully it lasts!

Thinking of it, I had a 12k blood sequencing invoice that was taken by mistake from my MSA (while Discovery should have paid).

Discovery agreed but the issue and mistake was not from them, it was from... government (National Health Laboratory Service deals with transplant matching).

NHLS issued the claim with the wrong ICD (disease code) so nothing Discovery could do.

I've emailed, written, called NHLS to not avail so I gave up.

Actually her cooking was really good tonight. I think I'll hang onto her for the time being. Rain check for if she steps out of line...

Rate of return since 01 December 2010 = 2.95%. Got absolutely milked with fees. Should have rather put that money into BTC.

Those fkkers also got me, makes me so mad thinking about how crooked they are and the FA that sold it to me was a close family “friend”.

Glad you’re on the mend.

What’s wrong with marriage, gentlemen? I’m unmarried so I have no experience on this subject.
Never marry someone who earns less (or a lot less) than you.

Mate of mine got 5 bar out of his divorce and gets alimony. Had to up it the other day so that its enough money for him to visit the kids every two weeks.... as she is taking them overseas.

You know what they say... Good judgement comes from experience and experience comes from bad judgement.
Just trust us that have been through the process...

Same. I have stopped mine and am in the process of moving it to 10x

Started mine in 2006 - If I had put that money in BTC I'd be Elon Musk
