How do you find a good doctor?

We usually go to Dr Kahn at the MediCross in Edenvale, but I just cannot handle waiting a day or two for an appointment.
If my little girl is sick I don't want to wait a day to see the doc, then its pointless how good he is.

I am really not willing to play hit and miss with doctors. How do you review a doctor?

Can anyone recommend a good Doctor in the Edenvale / Primrose / Bedfordview area?

You don't/can't. Most these things happen via word of mouth. Either that or just rock up there with some minor complaint & see how you are treated.

If your child is sick and you're worried you should visit the Casualty/Emergency Department of your hospital.

Otherwise, for a good GP, it often helps to find someone who's graduated a reasonable time ago, from a decent med school. They now offer Family Physician courses to GPs who want to do such a thing too. A pediatrician should be too much unless your daughter has a serious chronic illness
and in that case you should be visiting them regularly on an outpatient basis.

How would you do this other than calling the doc's office and asking him/her when he/she graduated and from which med school? :D

I will pm you the info of a brilliant Doc in your area.
He is unlike any Doc you have probably been to before, but he is awesome.......forget about the stuck up attitude, the white jacket etc, unless you like that sort of thing? Anyhow he is amazing!

White jacket is a good thing. Those docs on Scrubs don't wear 'scrubs' for nothing, it's an additional infection control measure.

Good luck finding a decent GP. since coming to Cape Town I haven't been able to find one. All they seem to be good for is sick notes and painkillers.

Well, thats the thing. I need a doctor that will sort my stuff out.
In this case my little girl just had the flu, all we needed was some antibiotics...

BUT.
I have an ingrown toenail that is hasseling me. Now I already feel stupid about going to the doctor for my owie toe so I'm avoiding it. I need a doctor that is going to cut the damn thing out, nail bed included. Not put me on a course of antibiotics and then see how it goes before they yank the peice of nail, leave the nail bed and advise me to cut my nail in some unsightly and uncomfortable way.
If I could find a strong topical anesthetic I would just do the job myself with the side cutters.

Antibiotics make me feel sick, and they make me sick. If I take antibiotics for my toe now, I will have the flu within a week. Doctors for some reason prescribe antibiotics straight off the bat.

Can never say if a doctor is good or bad without actually visiting one.

Maybe give Dr.Kahn a shout and tell him you need a doctor to urgently see you kid, and because he is busy, can he recommend somebody else?

Of find another doctor you know (maybe not a GP) and get them to recommend GP.

Oh no, thats over. She's been to another Doc (at the same MediCross) and got some antibiotics. No problem. Still tho. I don't want to have to rely on an opening or a cancellation to see my doctor....
