Fired for racist Facebook remarks

So, using this as example can I ask my company for a after-hours retainer fee? What rate could one ask for?

If I'm going to be judged as an employee on what I do on my own time, I need to be suitably compensated for being an after-hours agent of the company finish & klaar.

i fully agree, i am my own person, if the company wants me to be a certain person they should pay me extra

@Brixton tower: Look I am not a racist. I accepted that black and white has to get along in this country. I see many good black and white people and many idiotic black and white people. Just put yourself in this woman's shoes before you call her a racist so quickly and enjoy her predicament. Look at all the bad stuff that happened to her within a year? Seems as if everyone of those incidents were caused by a black person. This taxi just put the cherry on the cake. So she exploded in hate. I can see why she was so aggressive and you can understand where her racism comes from. People are sick and tired of these kind of things going on in the country with nothing being done about it. As Ghoti said, if you are in her position you have to know where to draw the line on social networks so what she did was wrong. But careful with the name calling.

If it was a women that angered her she'd probably have referred to her as a b*tch. If it was an Afrikaans person, a stupid Dutchman or rock spider. Or, as I demonstrated with my example, if she were black and the person she was venting over was white the term "white f&ck" may have been whipped out. All of these terms would be water off a duck's back but refer to someone as a k*ffir and the world ends.

I think we need to come up with a new insulting term for black people that we can use without fear of an over the top reaction.

There's absolutely no excuse for her bone-headed behavior. Like I said before, taxi drivers aren't saints but how does bad driving justify calling someone a savage, or the k-word?
South Africa has not been an English colony for over a 100 years, I don't get why white English-speakers persists with calling black people, and generally people who don't share their culture "savages". Go England on any council estate and you WILL savages who barely SPEAK English and live off government aid...and they happen to be white!

It's a WORD. A collection of sounds. It has no magical power - that kind of thing is from children's stories.

Then why not use it on your Facebook profile?

Because apparently the people who DO think it has some kind of magical power will try to get me fired.

A word only has the power over you that you allow it to have...

Is it bone headed when someone refers to another as a b*tch, c*nt, b*stard etc when angered? An insult is flung at someone in anger to vent. The best way to vent is to use a word that insults them most. K*ffir seems to do this best with a black person. As mentioned by a few now, it is black people that have given that word it's power.

Blacks in America have tried to take back control of the word n*gger by rapping about it and using it to refer to mates. Strangely it is still taboo for a white person to say it.

Why do black people insist on continuing to call whites colonialists? And why do they continue to refer to slavery? Been a while since those things happened too...

Read my post again. I never said white people are colonialist, I merely stated that South Africa has NOT been an English colony for 100 years. Even with this fact, some white English-speakers behave, and respond to black people as if they just got off the same boat which brought the 1820 settlers to the Eastern Cape.

Living in the past. Forever the victim. That's why.

Read his post again. He asked why white people are called colonialists, not why you called white people colonialists.

Do you think it's fair to ruin someone's life for uttering a word? That's the likely outcome of being fired these days.

Yes, if she's stupid enough to air her racist views on a social network she should be fired from her job. The same thing would happen to me if I referred to Indians in a derogatory way on Facebook/Twitter. There's absolutely no excuse. This woman is not a child, she knew exactly what she was doing when she vented her racist bile. If she feels confident that she was unfairly victimized she can fight her case at the CCMA, or the Labour Court if she gets no relief from the former.

I never said your called them colonialists. Nor did you specifically say I refer to blacks as savages but you asked why English-speakers do it. I countered by asking why blacks do it. If you don't, then good for you, but many do. Again pointing out those double standards that exist.

By the way, if a black person is acting in an uncivilised manner I may call them a savage. Likewise if a white person is acting uncivilised. No discrimination from me. If you're a c*nt, you're a c*nt, forget your race.
