First car advice? Looking at a Mazda CX-5/3

Hi guys,
Looking at getting my first car soon, must be automatic. I obviously want to spend as little as possible while getting something decent and safe. I was looking at like 2014 Fortuners but Im concerned about reliability and infinite repairs? I also know theres some sort of time limit to getting finance on an old vehicle. Alternatively looking at something like a 2017 Mazda CX-5 2.0 Active Auto but Im not sure what they are like.

Id prefer some sort of SUV for safety and my own and my families peace at mind, come from an area where there are a lot of accidents.

Very minimal.

I still had 3 years on the service plan, so I didn't pay those but my last service was R4500. It's due for another service now actually.

As for tyres, that will get costly as it's using 19" rims and those also need to be replaced pretty soon. Guess I will find out then what the damage is.

I haven't had any other problems mechanically with the car, only problem was self inflicted where the discs got all corroded after they got exposed to a bunch of sea water (spray over a low bridge, I wasn't driving on the beach :laugh: ) - had to get them grind down.

Unfortunately I think thats breaking into the 400 thousands, so if I was spending that much I would just get a second hand fortuner which would be a similar year.

cant compare. Jimny is like a defender or G wagon. a fashion statement. great little car, but its by no means a comfortable city dweller like the mazda. i still want one as a 4th car though

You can't go wrong with Mazda. They are great cars and are very reliable
 
I moved from a Mazda 2 to a Kia Sportage. The price and what you get I feel the Kia is overall better. I do love Mazda, but the option to have 5 years warranty and 5 year service plan as well as being able to extend it a winner.

a furtuna and safety / peace of mind, dont those permacab bakkies fallover going around a bend?
first car, safety, finance - get a used volvo
cheap, safe, no resale value

Look, if it's your first one, make sure you get a vehicle that is still covered by a full or partial Motor Plan. (This is not the same as a warranty.)

If this is truly important to you, as you detailed it, then make sure you get a vehicle that has Side Curtain airbags (those are not the same as side seat airbags - so go ahead and learn the difference) because many vehicles in SA do not have those installed, even though the same models in the EU and other markets will have those already pre-installed as standard safety components!

I never used to think about this stuff, but the amount of near misses and full-on gory accidents I see daily at broken light junctions has made me reconsider.
