I have a few flash drives and have used them without problem. Now I was given a "256MB USB2.0 Flash Drive" that is different to what I have seen before. It has the usual USB fitting at one end and then a short length of cable and a different fitting at the other end (a bit fatter than a USB fitting). I plugged the USB end into a USB port while my computer was off and then switched on but when I go to My Computer it does now show as an f: drive as my other flash drives do. Am I supposed to be doing something with the other end of the cable, i.e. plugging it in somewhere? I am running Windows XP. You guys might be falling off your chairs laughing but I don't mind.

Could you post a picture? I'm afraid the description is a bit vague :o

It might be that it requires power from another USB port, but that's highly unlikely.

Never seen one like that before.

Like techie said could you maybe post a pic of it?

Where's a chair that I can fall off of? :D
Just kidding. Yeah, upload a picture there and we will try help you.

Looks like a USB extension cable... Does the male end plug into the female end? In other words, are both ends USB - male & female?

I think this is what the OP is talking about.

Yes, that is what it looks like. I looked dongle up in the dic as I thought it might have sexual connotations ahd you were having me on. I see there really is such a thing but why does the packaging of this object not say dongle? Why does it say 'USB 2.0 Flash Drive" I wonder.

Did you buy it at a reputable shop in Oz? Maybe Dick Smith electronics or Tandy? There are lots of dodgy chinese imports in Oz - could be like "ruvry dog soup-yum-yum" on a chinese menu...

On the packaging it says Made in Taiwan and it says distributed by Atico Australia (Pty) Ltd. I am going to email my son in Perth. I didn't want to do that initially as he thinks we are so backward in "Africa" and who am I to prove a point?
