Hey Guys.

I've been having some serious problems with my downstream SNR margin as the title of the thread suggests. I usually sit with something like 20+. My problem is that every now and then (sometimes every 1 or 2 minutes, or sometimes once a hour) that margin drops incredibly to something like 13 or 15. this drop only lasts a few seconds then it jumps back to 20+ again.

This is incredibly annoying as I mainly use my internet to play World of Warcraft, so when this drop happens I see a 5 second delay in game or I disconnect.

So here's my question, what can I do to make the SNR margin more stable? I'm on a 512kbps line with Web Africa.

p.s I'm kind of a noob with this stuff so please don't post anything to technical:D

I have a d-link DSl 2640OU. Unfortunately I had the same problems with other routers that I used. Mmm I'm wondering if I maybe should have mentioned that my downstream Line Attenuation is 55 and for upstream it is 31

damn 55 o.0

you quite far from dslam :(

ask telkom for port reset ,make sure plug alarm etc, and try diffrent filter and try without one :)

Thanks man! will do. This is very off topic but what the heck, how is Lightbringer as a server? heard there's lots of saffers there :P

Do you think there that perhaps making my line speed 384 will stabalise the Noise Margin more?

Most likely you have interference on your line somewhere between yourself and the exchange. I had the exact same problem on my line, so read up quite a bit. (At one point I was driving up and down my street with an AM radio to try and locate interference :))

Seems the most "obvious" culprits for these kinds of interference are power supplies with broken filter capacitors in things like TV sets, vacuums, cellphone chargers etc. In those cases the source must be close to you. So first step: unplug all electrical equipment in your home to see if the problem goes away. If it does, you're much closer to identifying the problem.

If that doesn't help, and looking at your description, it might also be something like a motorised gate? If your complex has one (or there's a business park down the street), keep an eye on it - you might find your dropouts corresponding with its open/close cycles!

I never found the source of my interference - Telkom moved my line to a closer "fiber multiplexer" which solved the problem. So ultimately, if you can't find the source, then complain complain complain. (I had to get Telkom out about 5 times, but they DID solve it eventually.)
