FNB customers beware new scam

None of my FNB cards start with 4901.
I see theres a
4790 56 - First National Bank (South Africa) Visa Electron Debit Card
in the list as well

But please send me the full 16 digits, plus expiry date and 3-digit CVV numbers on the back, and I will check again

Whenever FNB calls me and there is an issue, I ask them for the reference number and tell them I will contact them via secure chat, I go there, put in the reference number and sort out any issue that is on the table. That way we both know its legit and no details are required to be asked

Why would any one with half functioning brain cells fall for this?

That's a rather arrogant response. I can think of people who might fall for this.

Factory "shop floor" workers who may be lacking in education and who just don't work with bank numbers (or any numbers) aside from their own.

Elderly people who, even in their working years even if that were in an office, perhaps didn't work with bank account numbers. Cheques were still the main method of payment. In fact some of them, when phoned, may even think "How kind of the bank to call me." They grew up in a different era when one didn't need to be constantly suspicious.

Women who were stay-at-home moms and full-time housewives and who never worked in commerce and industry. The modern version is probably (hopefully) more clued up.

I know my mom and pop might.

my RMB and FNB Private Wealth cards both start with 4707. my normal cold card is 4127. credit cards would also have a different BIN. so i guess the scammers would need to know what kind of account they have ahead of time

On FNB, they need the complete card number and pin to up the temporary or permanent limits. Then when doing the payment it requires you to say yes on the app. Should never give your card number+pin over the phone even if they provide whatever 4 digits for you.

The only time I will say yes on the app is when my private banker requests it, and usually its because I emailed him to request opening an account etc so I know about it before he even calls. For some unknown transaction...never.

Also the popup on the app that you must say yes to, tells you clearly what it is for, so no idea how you can also fall for that, but I guess some people do.
Why would you not just use app based 2fA for that instead? Less numbers to type in and less hassle with more security as you only have one device for it at a time.

Ask fnb?

When you up the limits in the app you also need to enter the card and pin.

When you up the limits online you need to enter card and pin AND approve on the app as 2fa.

It's how fnb does it, I don't have a say in the matter.
