FNB Easy Account VS Capitec Global One

Oh, so do I keep this cash in my wallet, taking up lots of pocket space?

I know most of my monthly expected cash needs and draw that once at the beginning of month. This is taken out off as needed and at month end is R0.

Still do it at ATM, I don't want some cashier giving my the 1000yard stare when I ask her for cash and they don't have half that amount in their till. In fact, I shop before the busy time, so far advanced is my planning. Even month end I don't stand in a queue because I'm out by 10am.

And my unplanned cash expenses are unplanned, how must I know when a friend will call be up at 7pm on a Friday to go for drinks? I don't want to keep more cash at home.

Are you one of those people that spend money more responsibly when you're actually using physical currency?

Nah, the planned cash is only 8% of monthly expenditure. I'm always within about R50 at the till with my monthly grocery spend budget, which I swipe for. I generally still have money in my account 3 days before payday (lets not talk about 1 and 2 days before payday :o, it's empty then).

My weekly groceries also within budget. I guess I could draw weekly and thus probably not get the 1000yard stare, but then the costs overall will be almost the same anyway.

And I just don't want to swipe at a bar for every drink for example and also want to be on an enforced strict budget due to alcohol and good time feelings and such being involved.

I tend not to carry or keep cash since it easily can be misplaced also harder to work out how you spent where and when.

I don't understand how using cash will keep you within budget.

Swiping is free so I always use it first.

I only go draw the cash as I head out to the alcohol refreshment and socialization establishment, and I know what and where I spent it (on alcohol and at the alcohol refreshment and socialization establishment.

You swipe for every R20 or whatever drink and shooter you get? Or do you swipe first and say here, let me swipe R200, I'll be drinking that much, cut me off when I get there? (just thought of this one now). To be honest I have never actually paid attention to there being or not being POS machines at most or all alcohol refreshment and socialization establishments I have went to.

And it's mostly once a month, some months nothing, other months sommer 4 times.

Normally when someone wants to go out they're paying. If I'm going out then I go to places I'm a regular and they run a tab.

Zapper or Snapscan > swiping > cash
That's my preference.

I don't go anywhere else that uses zapper and snap scan, I'll check out if any of the alcohol refreshment and socialization establishments I go to has those. But better be prepared and have the cash at hand anyway...

I went and opened a Global account at Capitec last week. I must say that it was the best banking experience I've ever had. However, the online banking and android app is paltry as compared with FNB, but as an investment vehicle, personally I'm not really worried. For day-to-day online transacting, I will say FNB is the way to go.

Brick and mortar - Capitec
Online Banking - FNB (by a country mile)
Fees - Either (depending on your planned banking style)
Interest rates (positive balance) - Capitec
Rewards programme - FNB eBucks (no brainer)
Safety Deposit box - Capitec :crylaugh:

In summary, the old cliche - depending on your needs, choose that one that best suits you. The differences between the two will only be as important as the weight attached according to your personal needs.

Also hardware token for Internet banking.

Sadly no more. I had to disable my token when I wanted to activate the app. There are some pro's and cons to the app and token.

Token is very secure even when lost they would still need your login details to use your banking.
If you have token then you can't have the app.

App is pretty cool. Don't need data to generate a token to get online banking.
If your phone battery is dead or your phone is broken or needs to be wiped and reinstalled and you lose the app then you can't log into internet banking. Even if you change phones you need to go into the branch to re activate the new phone.

Do either or both of these accounts come with an embossed card that can be used for online purchases?

Here is an interesting fact and recent change to the FNB smart account that most people don't know.

Before online purchases was only allowed when you paid extra and ordered a personalized card. This has now changed.

With a FNB Easy account they only come with non personalized cards which any FNB branch can issue on the spot over the counter which the client can then activate verified by visa for online.

So these cards do not have your name on but can be used for online purchases if you have activated the verified by visa on the fnb.co.za website.

Log in to your online banking. Click on My Cards and click on Activate under the verified by visa section next to the cancel card option.

This is actually a very neat feature from FNB as you don't have to wait for a personalized card to come via courier a week later. It is also cheaper to replace.

Or you can get a personalized Capitec card on the spot

Thanks very much! FNB is looking like a good option. Although I heard that you can't link paypal to the fnb easy account ;(

Why would you go FNB?

Go capitec, PayPal works, adwords works, online payments works I've not come accros anything that doesn't work yet.

Only reason in still have an FNB account is for the business. (Pty Ltd.)
