FNB explains their website redesign

I am not against change at all but companies need to understand that different platforms require different UI's. The method of interfacing with a web page is different on the different platforms. PC web browsers can have pop up menus or hover over menus. They also have much bigger screens. Phones have small screens and need to provide the bare essentials, not big pictures, etc. Tablet designs should work in the same way that apps work. It is more effort but the rewards make it worthwhile. FNB have decided to screw 3/4 of their clients by focusing their design on the tablet/phone market. It's a great tablet design but a poor PC design. MS made a similar mistake with WinRT in Windows 8. They had a very valid agenda for pushing it so I can understand their reasoning but FNB has no such reason other than saving costs by building one site.

I also have to say that I can't see how they can say that they tested it properly as the first thing I clicked on after logging in produced an error. They focus group probably grew with the project. I think it's doubtful that they asked a subset of their clients to take a look before deploying it once the site was complete.

It's far faster than the old one.

Faster is great. No one is complaining about that. People are complaining about a tablet type design on a PC. Well that and the large number of bugs in the system at release.

Let me also add, that a responsive design does not mean that the web site has to look like a mobile app. It's easy to create a responsive design but retain a PC Web app look and feel.

Aah okay. Yeah that does make sense. It does look a bit Windows 8ish :-P And trying to get everyone using the same interface is a daft idea - it's bound to cause issues somewhere along the line.

It does all fit into one screen for me, but the only display I've tried it on is 24"... I'll try it out on a smaller one this evening.

Edit: Helloooo senior member :-D

Who are you trying to convince that Capitec is better than FNB, us or yourself?

Because changes that makes things more cluttered and information more hidden is bad change. My colleague showed me her FNB website on her PC, its not nice at all.

Capitecs site might be a bit old style and not fancy looking at all but its been like that from the start. If they ever improve it, I am sure it will be an actual improvement.

It will take some time to get used to but tbh I'd be more concerned if the mobile apps weren't so damn good. I do the majority of banking with the apps and it's just so much easier that way.

My problem is not with the design, but with all the bugs, problems and other FRUSTRATIONS! The site did not bode well with business and caused more upsets than anything else. I see that they made no mention in regard with any problems. PR FAIL!

Yup, I like the new site layout - far easier to do lots of stuff that was previously hidden - but the lack of rewards section, and a few bugs (I see they've already fixed one that affected me) puts a damper on the launch.

Having said that, I'm with FNB mainly for their rewards, which are about to get a huge shot of adrenaline next month. Free uncapped ADSL? Yes please. Once I have that, they could make the site look like dog poo and I'd still stick with them :)

I'm willing to bet you anything that's exactly what the FNB design team thought :) Any change, where millions of customers are involved, will result in tons of moaning no matter what you do.

For the record, I moaned about FNB's site before the change - I prefer the new one. Previously a lot of things were hidden 2 or 3 levels deep in those tiny menus on the left - I feel the old site's functionality had LONG outgrown the UI. The new one is more suited to the increased functionality FNB have added over the years.

My concern is not the design i am for responsive when its done properly. But the code on that website is so goddam amateur which poses the question of security.

Can somebody tell me how i can check my rewards level? (sorry if this was mentioned on one of the other threads and for the slight derail)

You have to do it on ebucks.com for now. (My eBucks -> my Discounts). Sucks. I liked the breakdown on the banking site.

I think it look like ass.

What I don't understand is, how could a commercial entity of this weight not have a competent creative director / UX guy? I don't blame whoever did the design; man needs to eat regardless of skill level or talent. Hell, I could pushing out similar rubbish back when I first learned how to use Photoshop, HTML and CSS. I lay the blame on the tasteless monkey who thumbed up something that obviously doesn't pass muster.

Flat design is a great way cater for the increasing number of websites that behave like applications, and implemented with platform agnosticism design in mind, a few media queries, should scale nicely. This is just...I'm at a loss. I suspect that the bosses, the guys who have absolutely nothing to with the usability and design, ultimately had a hand in this. Gah!

I wish I could have seen the budget.

Just checked the new site out...siff :sick:

Where is the petition that we sign to get the old site back? :D

I don't get the "it's cluttered" argument. I find it a lot cleaner than the old site. Everything has it's place and is easy to navigate to.

Some laughs to be had when inspecting the source:

// TODO : shouldn't be building HTML here
if(subTabIndex==0){
tab ='<li class="currentTab'+tabClass+'" onclick="_subtabs.select(this,'+subTabIndex+')"><span>'+tabName+'</span></li>';
$(subTab).removeClass("hiddenSubtabContent").addClass("visibleSubtabContent");
}else{
tab ='<li class="'+tabClass+'" onclick="_subtabs.select(this,'+subTabIndex+')"><span>'+tabName+'</span></li>';
}

Shouldn't build HTML?

The oke who designed this has huge fingers. I found its better to set the zoom to 66% in chrome. Now the oversized buttons don't waste quite so much space.

I can't find the Smart device list anymore?

Can someone please tell me were is the paypal options. When you click on accounts you see your paypal account but cant top up or withdraw funds.

I couldn't find that particular nugget if gold, but I suspect what the dev meant was that traditionally logic is supposed to be separate from presentation. Which is obviously not the case here.
