Not sure if this is the right place, but I need confirmation that this is nothing to be concerned about.

Below are my Facebook message to FNB with their response.

Fnb app provides voip. To do this it integrates with your contacts list. It's not sending your contacts to fnb.

Ok. It also says that it is has access to read my smses. Are this also for the voip feature? If one do not use the voip feature, are there an option to use the app without allowing it access to private information on the device?

IIRC on Android Marshmallow you will be able to select which permissions you wish to grant an app...

They have an entire dialler and messaging interface built into the app. You can use the app to make calls and send and receive SMS's - Thus the app needs to access these features. As a mobile dev... Accessing contacts != Reading contacts. It simply means the permission was granted, and when you open the dialler part of the FNB app, there are your contacts, all internal. For them to ship it off to some server will be such a high risk thing to do they wouldn't. Its FNB.. not Absa.

Maybe they should have a lite version which only gives the internet banking functionality.

Did you write the same complaints to Whatsapp, We Chat, BBM or whatever else you use?

No because this were the first time I received alerts about security issues. Whatsapp is suppose to have access to my contacts. I just did not expect an internet banking app to read my contacts and smses etc.

The FNB app is today asking me to enable my iphone camera and location services, take a Selfie and enter the card number and PIN for one of my accounts - sounds like a scam to me. Any clarification ?

Have you just updated it? I did this after updating my ipad software and updating the FNB app a few weeks ago.

I have autoupdate on - Nope, App store doesn't list my FNB app as recently updated since Sep 27 and I used the app without problems earlier today. Now it refuses to let me proceed to the logon before I opt-in to the Selfie and card number and PIN shamoozle

I read about Switch here on MyBroadband, but I am an Existing FNB customer - I do not wish to switch from another bank.
