So, if your phone has NFC, FNB was one of the first financial service providers to enable tap to pay in SA. But not anymore... I just got this msg in my fnb app:

My guess is they want you to use your google wallet instead... may theres a story here @Jan

Why did anyone ever use this instead of Google Pay or Apple Pay?

It never made sense.

Makes perfect sense to kill it off, it should never have existed in the first place.
It was available in SA before those were.

I have a Huawei phone. At the moment, my FNB virtual card won't work with the app Tap To Pay, though the normal cards do. Support don't know why, suggest I add it to Google Wallet. I don't have Google Wallet, so I guess it's back to tapping with actual cards... :(

Or just upgrade to an actual smartphone.

It's an amazing phone. It's be nice when I can get another phone with a camera that good though...
Cant you just side load google wallet? Or does google actively reject huawei on google apps?

You could also try side-loading Samsung Pay... maybe.

My wife's Xiaomi also struggle with Fnb pay. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't. Maybe she forgets to unlock the phone first.

Other friends also struggle, especially if they have multiple accounts and cards.

I never had issues with my samsung and fnb pay with the virtual card.

As per the message from FNB, remove all the cards from pay settings, then re-add only the virtual card and set as default.

You are right, but Samsung Pay was available before FNB Pay way. My S9+ was epic for all the things Samsung Pay could do.
But I happily moved to Google Wallet when it was available.

Low and behold guys. FNB just announced their Tap and Pay function will be discontinued. Tap and pay with Google wallet, Samsung Wallet, Fitbit Pay, Garmin Pay, Swatchpay and Apple wallet.

However if you have a hauwei that doesn't support google... then get an actual phone

I mainly have my Huawei for the camera. Where am I going to find a phone with a better camera (especially at the price!)? I suppose I could just get a second el cheapo phone for tap to pay...

What Huawei is it?

ABSA never had that, and Standard Bank decided randomly when it works.

Google Pay is the way.
