FNB removes new eBucks rule

Definitely not a scam.

I've not spent a cent on fuel for two months now, decided I'd cash in my 2 years of ebucks and put them to good use.

Lol. You do realise you are paying for that fuel even though they say it's a freebie?

This was a rule I had no issue with (didn't affect me at all).
Their points earning rule changes suck though...
No more points for just having but not using an overdraft
All other points based on products taken up

I'll never get to a decent eBucks earnings percentage

If they really want me to start liking them again, remove the earning caps they put on the cheque cards.
Yes, I'm still with them because no other bank is going to offer me the same as what I'm getting now, but I was not impressed with the new caps they put in place.

+1 consumers pay for the rewards somewhere down the line. Someone say VISA fees...
Well, all FNB consumers are paying for the rewards unfortunately, whether they belong to eBucks or not. Which bank, credit or debit card do you use or are you a cash only person?

Rewards programmes are designed to encourage one to spend, and as is the case usually with this type of thing the big spenders get better incentives. If you are going to be spending the money anyways, then why not take advantage of it?

I think you have it all wrong. You give the BANK permission to market to you, not to give your details to other marketers. If you're getting spam from other companies then you probably either selected some other marketing consent (not the one that you need to have access to eBucks) or they got your details from somewhere else.

Like almost everyone else who has posted, I only receive 1 - 2 emails per month, never received a phone call and only recall 1 - 2 SMS that I've ever received. I get my eBucks every single month.

I'm one of the few people who reads the stuff I sign. Trust me I never gave anyone else permission to spam me and it started within 2 days of opening my FNB account. I have 2 cellphones, only FNB has this number. And even if it was just the bank, the point is I don't want them spamming me either. They know a lot of people would opt out if they could which is why they force you to give consent.

Incidentally, someone from the bank phoned Wednesday, trying to sell me some crap. I told her no thanks and they phoned back the next day

No, every South African consumer pays for every reward program out there whether they make use of one or not. E.g. Vendors are billed VISA fees per transaction of 6% when consumers use credit and check cards, the rewards are small kickbacks from your bank to encourage this kind of transaction over cash. In the case of my bank (Nedbank), they try hard every year to get me to take an Amex card and tell me I can double my points accrual if I use Amex. The vendor is billed 11% per transaction when people use Amex. Who do you suppose pays the 11% every time an Amex card user swipes at the local grocer? The gogo living in poverty pays as much as the president of SA as do you and I. I pay no card use fees per transaction, but the vendor must charge someone. Now if everyone switched to Amex, vendors would have to up prices, so I stop just short of swearing at the call center operator every time they phone to offer me an Amex card to 'score' more 'rewards'. I'm already getting a grand out of greenbacks every three to four months and I know its not a free lunch. You pay for it as do I.

how did you do that?

It's based on your discount level. If you log into eBucks, it'll show what level you're on.
Level 1 - 5%
Level 2 - 10%
Level 3 - 20%
Level 4 - 30%
Level 5 - 40%

If you then want to buy an item or vouchers, then you must ONLY use eBucks to qualify for the discount. You cant split the transaction using eBucks and vouchers.

I also noticed that FNB keeps switching points earning activities to mandatory/prerequisite activities.
E.G. receive statements via email used earn a couple hundred points a month, now nothing.
Same goes for using online / cellphone banking

It's still money that you're getting back, irrespective of whether it's your money or not. Unlike the others, where your cash disappears into a black hole.

I'm not saying you don't get something back, I'm saying it would be better if banks ditched this system and just charged the vendor less at the till. That way everyone scores.

Why would you want to support 'rewards' that push up prices for everyone? And why should you be funding everyone's 'rewards' when you pay cash or do an electronic transfer for goods? Why would you want me to score double the points from my bank at your expense (11% per transaction)?

Ok, i don't agree with how you are phrasing it but moving on... I do agree with you that card fees do inflate prices and that all consumers are footing the bill by raised prices. I didn't know the exact percentages and didn't realise that Amex was a ridiculous 11%! Cash also has a cost attached to it due to handling/transport, but I suppose not as high as the card fee percentage.

Agreed. It's an "evil" system where everyone except the banks lose.

Its been twice in a row where my bank has handed me an Amex card in addition to my Visa card when I collected my replacement. Naturally I asked them then and there to cut it up, but it annoys the heck out of me the way they keep pushing it despite my telling the call agent to make a note that I don't want and will never want an Amex card (and even explain why). Trouble is that joe average looks at it from the POV of 'how can I score' and doesn't consider the overall consequences... And then my bank treats me like an idiot and tries to argue that the card and extra points are at no cost to me.

Agree, cash handling costs too, but cash doesn't cost much compared to Visa, which is why some vendors even offer discounts for cash over card like www.thepcshop.co.za

Visa for me is about lowering risk.

I just bought R3000 worth of Makro vouchers with 18000 ebucks. Scam? If so I fail to see how I'm being scammed.
Ive been with ebucks for many years. Regardless of the rules, I have ALWAYS come out on top.

I only get the "in contact" style sms's from ebucks.. I find it hard to believe ebucks would be sending you sms's about instant cash loans. Sorry. it doesn't gel with me.
In fact I only get one or two ebucks email newsletters a month besides my statements and account activity mails. I cannot see what people are b1tching about. Surely you cannot be blaming general spam on ebucks?

How did you get R3000 worth of vouchers with only 18000 ebucks?

awesome. I am on level 4 - 30% discount.

Seems like i need more debt to get to level 5. i think ill stay on level 4 lol

Call me when they remove the rule forcing you to choose between endless torrents of spam or losing your ebuck privileges.

Edit: Oh wait, seems they did???

But now that I've already agreed, will I still be spammed?

Edit 2: No, they didn't. Spam is to continue.

:downvote:

gmail spam filter ftw

How do you get to level 4?
What do I need to do (excluding any debt products)?

If you have other qualifying accounts (FNB Home Loan / One Account / Single Facility / Structured Facility), they will boost you 1 level.

Didn't affect me but I'm glad that they're listening to people. Now if only they would remove that stupid rule for R5000 in swipes before you can get SLOW lounge access.

Is it R5000 pm ?

and does it have to be swipes or can it be debit orders/transfers ?
