I see those that enforce a 9 to 5 daily suffer in the long term as they will be faced with increasing difficulty holding on to talent, most won't enjoy the commute, most will prefer flexibility and over time, that will add up. Fact is, we have proven that WFH is possible, any that don't evolve will be left behind, there are obviously industries that will not be able to, but change is coming as more and more of their functions will become replaced.

That is surely due to them having a lack of experience. And young twitter-like comms can't be helping.

They are also the most self conscious when it comes to switching on cameras for meetings.

Really shows the negative impact that camera filters in social medias platforms have on people's self esteems.

Go back to the office if they ask.

If you don't like it, quit. They'll find a replacement for you in a heartbeat who WILL happily go into the office.

Not in my industry they won't. Company spent 6 months trying to fill the role I am currently in. That's due to there not being that many skilled professionals in my industry doing what I do. So, no they won't.

I wouldn't call it "forced". Working in offices has been a part of employment and business since the 18th century. Despite our advantages to the contrary, many people and companies work better on premise. So these companies are merely returning to the normal operations before the pandemic and expecting their staff to do the same. if it wasn't for COVID-19 offices wouldn't have just randomly closed and sent people home. It was an extenuating circumstance.

So, because we've been doing it for so long, we should just continue doing the same thing and not improve the way of work?

Not how the world works for the most part. The way of work has changed, for better or worse. But it has changed and there will be no going back to things pre-covid.

Exactly this, We can see it already by companies now stipulating their WFH policy in job ads.

Why were you asked to sign a new contract? Curious about legal reasons one can get an existing employee to sign a new agreement, if the juristic entity did not close.

Trying to find out if there is a way our company could force us to do the same for some stuff in our contracts (beneficial to us employees) that they don't want to pay anymore.
It was more an addition to our contracts that changed the house rules. Basically stating the interprovincial thing and no longer being allowed on site as our access permits have been disabled. The latter was more for the older folks who insisted that they want to work from the office. But the company saw the rental they paid for our offices as a waste of money.

If one or two employees continued going to the office, the company had to pay rental for all four floors that we rented which would make no sense.

They should do a study on what WFH does to mental health. Some people don't seem to handle it so well. Couple of friends who used to be fit, got quite fat as well. Mental health, I can just imagine depression rates have gone up. Although lockdown might have been the big killer.

Yes, but if companies managed to operate just fine over the past 2 years with their staff working remotely, why does it have to change back?

For most cases I can see it being way more beneficial and profitable for both the employees and employer (make the office smaller, no more travel subsidies, etc).
Nobody managed to "work just fine" - service levels are atrocious and everybody blames COVID. If even Google and Microsoft can't make work from home work, I don't think there are many that will. We tried it, it failed, let's move one.

I think the only people pushing for a return to work are these blood-sucking landlords. Besides the water cooler conversations, I cannot see the benefit of people working in an office. As long as companies have a way for people to stay focussed and a way to monitor their workflow, then really, what's the issue

Most people I know have returned on the 10th already. Nobody in that group has resigned. I know people who were let go due to circumstances, some still unable to get employment.

The landscape still looks mighty unhealthy, though. Cancellations all over the place, it is more unpredictable than cryptocurrency.

interestingly and i've said this before, out of our whole company the ones making the biggest noise about "things have changed why should we go back to the office" are the people with the worst performance reviews pre-covid and the ones that always had some or other problem. And others i've spoken to in companies have had similar experiences. Whilst i'm not saying it the norm, there are many hard-working people at home, the fact is many people work better at the office where its focused on work. and that is easily reflected in their output and there's nothing wrong with that.

Them and middle management, I know of clients looking or have already cut the "fat" in that section. Suddenly, the WFH employees are easily managed by technology and simple daily morning checkins. Middle managers have nothing to manage and have no value to add, worse, they pick fights and create problems to remain relevant.

What surprised me at my wife's work is that employees are now citing that they cannot come into the office as they have to drive too far i.e. they have since moved, 1 even moved into another province.

I mean WTF, people have employment contracts, and irrespective what you want, you either conform or resign, simple.

PS: I support work from home, and enjoy working from home, but the employer ultimately calls the shots

Couple of friends, huh? It's endearing when you refer to yourself in the third person like that.

Nothing to do really. I had been given the privilege of working from home last year even though most of my co-workers had to go into the office. November last year I was told everyone, including me is to start working from the office full time again. No more working from home, or doing half days at the office and the rest from home etc. I accepted it as it was a privelege, not a right. Took some getting used to being back in the office and not being able to do my emails while sitting in my underwear lol, but I will survive. lol.

I'm not mad at my home, I like it here.

Happy to be working from home.

But, yes, you're right. My wife will never be able to work from home. Some people don't cope with it well.

It will.

Right, so based on your anecdotal evidence; you've concluded that we will revert to exactly how we were pre-covid? Have I got that right?

Other, been working from home for quite a while before it became a "thing" due to covid. That said, once working from home is experienced, at least for me, I'd resign and look for options long before I was forced to go to an office. The only exception to this would be if I had no other choice and had to put bread on the table. Even then, it would only be temporary until I could find something else.

Did't you hear @neoprema 's reasoning for this is that you must be a poor performer and that you'll be forced to go back to the office anyway - because that's what we've been doing for decades....

So be prepared my friend.
