Mine too 169000km, it had a leak from the tappet cover gasket but I replaced the gasket and all is well now
The tappet cover gasket must be Ford's Achilles heel, I had to replace one on my sister's 2006 Duratec Fiesta, R800 for a cheap piece of rubber.

My Opel is on its original out of the factory out of the factory at 242k kms.

Ok back to the problem, I had a look on mine and the bottom pipe and thermostat inlet remain cold until the engine reaches operating temp, then as the thermostat opens the temp increases to lukewarm, letting the car idle for a while the temp increased until it was more or less the same as the inlet. If I were you I'd let the car idle until it's good and hot and check if the thermostat housing inlet is hot or cold, if it is cold the thermostat is most likely the culprit, if not and the inlet pipe remains cold with thermostat hot the radiator is probably blocked. If it were the water pump you should still get some natural circulation through the radiator and the whole system will be hot, my 2c..

Yah I agree, and that I have checked. With the car just at idle everything works just as you described. Inlet pip gets very hot, then followed by a gradual heating of the radiator and bottom outlet pipe. And then eventually all pies and radiator are very hot, and at this time the fan kicks in.. Like clock work. The issue is only when I drive on an open long road. Then shortly after you stop the fan kicks in, inlet pipe very hot, outlet pipe and radiator nice and cold....

Had the badge engineered Mazda Rustler 1.6. Man I miss that cabbie. The only real issue I had with it was the left front wheel bearing needed regular replacing. Other than that it was pretty bullet proof.

I find it a bit hard to believe that after 2 new thermostats ( each from different shops ) and it is still that..
If you have the old ones why not test them? When I replaced mine I used the Ford part as it was R300 more than the pirate part.

Yip, probably worth a shot. However I only have the one still. The first one I cant find.. think I threw it away. Worth mentioning that I replaced the thermostat along with the housing as an assembly, on both occasions.

To get back to those restrictors, where exactly are they located in the pipes?

Ah one thing I forgot, are you absolutely sure you have the heater hoses connected the right way around? A mate of mine cocked this up on his Bantam and had cooling problems until he swopped them around again.

Yes I did, cross checked with another Bantam. ALL was connected correctly.
