I like the benefits/costs pointed out. But i was thinking more in the line of fuel consumption? Weight? how bad for the environment? Reliability? KW & torque potential, response to modifications, cooling issues around those lines.

That's possible. Not smoother than a 4 though...
Why not test drive both cars and make a decision like that. There is no way you will gets answers from forums as 'we' are bias in our opinions.
No no nothing to do with how great one car is or the other. I was just thinking what the engineers might have thought when they made their decisions to go for 5cylinders or 4... was just wondering
EDIT: Specifically the type of engine not the car or how good or bad the engine is made more a 4cylinder vs 5cylinder cost/benefits.
Like Rotory vs Piston... ones cheap others expensive one's light other heavy, one small other big, one big kw small volume other small volume little kw... etc etc etc

The engines are transversely mounted, so there's a limit on how long the engine can be in order to fit; that'll exclude a straight-six. So if you want a more powerful engine than the 2.0 4-cylinder, you either need to go V6, which might be a real squeeze in the engine compartment, if it fits at all, or a 5-cylinder. In this case, the 5 would be a better choice.

Latest on my Ford Focus 1.6
Gearbox is not changing gears nicely. I have complained a few times, and finally they decided they will replace it, not with a new one, but with a reconditioned one
But I dont know if its the gearbox, but who am I to complain.
Its booked in for monday morning, they say it will take 2 days. My rear shocks also need replacing (got 52000km's on the clock)
All in all, Im not happy with Ford so far. From the beginning the car has not been right, and getting something done from ford is like pulling teeth.
I miss my VW velociti. In 3 years only the alternator gave me problems.
Also, dont buy the 1.6 petrol ford focus. It has NO torque! Horsepower isnt too bad.
Fuel consumption I guess is average considering the weight of the car and how I drive (fast lane)
Drive comfort, steering etc is really good, but clutch/gearbox is not easy to drive with.
I have to think about pulling off every time, because its so hard to keep revs constant.

Ford HO.. I'll agree. But if you have a decent dealer who you can speak to, then its a whole new ball game.

IMHO the design of the Citi Golf's clutch is a p1ss-poor design as the clutch rod (which passes straight through the gearbox to the clutch's pressure plate) is sometimes fond of drilling a hole into the pressure plate.
Not kidding, it happened twice to myself, and I was not amused. Also, the entire clutch assembly broke twice as well - leaving me in a tight spot once.
Not fun.
In contrast, my recent car haven't given me any serious problems so far.

Hahaha shame. have a look at 2007 sales of the GTi and then the ST, name your year GTi sells more. 3 STs for every GTi? UK? I doubt that... Can Chavs afford STs? Im sure theyd all love STs!!

In Europe as a whole the Focus and the Golf are selling in very similar numbers. The Focus was the world's best selling car a couple of years ago.

Let me tell you all a little secret I heard from someone who works in the car industry...
Car dealerships (Like Barloworld) Trade cars around to each other (buy/sell) to make up numbers. The stats you get from them is not accurate, the best would be to count cars on the highway.

Interesting, and scary shame.... Ford number one best seller for the past 2 decades!!! Unbelievable!! So unbelievable I was going to call you out and say the listing was in alphabetical order....
I dont understand how anyone with brains or style will buy the previous Fords, the current Fiesta and Focus are ok but the previous ones

You can't be serious?! So you'd rather go for a Sunday afternoon drive and then extrapolate the number of cars that you counted as a better indicator of new car sales than to trust the stats released by an organisation like the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, which is where the numbers came from in the link that I posted?
And also, do those dealers register the new cars each time they trade them amongst each other? That's right, they don't. New cars only get registered once somebody actually buys them.
