Hi, I recently removed my 250 GB Western Digital External hard drive from its enclosure and put it in my PC. My problem is that I need to format it because it can not be used until I do so but using windows explorer or even computer management to do it is just taking way too long. I left it on for the entire night and managed to get through 6 % of the formatting process! . My question is, is their any other software to format my HDD with ? or am I just doing something wrong?

thanks

It shouldn't take all night to only format 6%! Something is not right.

Why do you have to format it in the first place? It should work straight out of the enclosure. Perhaps its buggered. You could try a quick format; but that would just bypass whatever was causing the slow full format - and the problem would still exist.

Download diagnostic tools from the manufacture website and run them. Prepare for bad news....

I can't access the western digital downloads section, it just time out...

Was it working in the enclosure?

If right-click, format isn't working then I'd be concerned, you shouldn't need another way.

You could have zapped it with a bit of static, although highly unlikely.

No, it was not working at all in the enclosure, it was not showing up at all, but when it's actually in the PC, it shows up...

Just right click it in my computer and select format, quick format!

Try and get your hands on Acronis Disk Director - will help you format as the built-in Windows format does strange things sometimes - with Acronis try the quick format option, then the complete format - a 250GB drive shouldn't take more that 15-20 minutes for a full format.

Also try a drive checker tool to see if the drive is knackered.
