I agree with bb_matt that posts should not be removed, but those parts of a post that are offensive and amount to a personal attack, without adding anything constructive, should be removed.

Whether something is offensive or not is up to your own oppinion - sure some kids do go a bit crazy, but I do not want *anyone* messing with the content of my or other peoples posts thanks, just because they might see it as "offensive".

Karnaugh, you clearly were not witness to the slew of personal attacks I was subject to when I joined MyAdsl. You suggest that there is no difference between an offensive personal attack and an opinion that simply differs from one's own. This is not true. Yes, the line between "offence" and "opinions" is not clear cut, but that does not that the line doesn't exist at all. I do not presume to know where the line is, but it is usually quite obvious when it has been crossed.

Example:

Personal attack: "You stupid ass! You know it doesn't work like that!"

instead of

Good reply: "Sorry, but I cannot agree. It doesn't work like that IMO."

The personal attack is usually accompanied by an insult like in the first part of my example... :)

You're obviously unfamiliar with the personal attacks and insults I recieve every day ;) Including from some of the moderators here...

I appologise for the tone of my post, I didnt know you were reciving personal attacks, I just find on alot of other forums that moderators tend to only use these kinds of things as leverage to apply only when they see fit - and not consistantly. Eventualy it becomes pointless to even try have a discussion if your posts get tampered

Hi Karnaugh!

You make it sound like it happens on a regular basis. This is a public forum with a fair administrator. If there are complaints, you can lodge it with any of the mods and it will then be taken up amongst the mods. If you feel one of the mods is treating you unfairly then mention it to RPM or one of the other mods. Simple. You can even make it a public issue if you like, but then you must be willing to have the contents of the edited or deleted post discussed.

Antowan

Karnaugh I am mildly familiar with your interactions on MyAdsl. And I do think that you have a very valid point in saying that sometimes overmoderation leads to it being pointless to even try and have a discussion. Just dont forget that undermoderation can have the same effect when it degenerates into a game of "who can get the most wittiest insults in".

I think that for the most part the mods on MyAdsl have struck a good, healthy balance. If anything, sometimes they are a little too liberal, but after a warning or two the offenders usually back off. This is, of course, only really speaking about those particular subforums I go to the most - Announcements and General Discussions. I cant speak for the other subforums.

Not doughting you Debbie2, but do you have specific examples of personal attacks ?

Lets not forget, this is to some extent an anonymous forum - within reason - and forums do have the issue of things not feeling quite as personal as they would otherwise. Having said that, you can be hurt by what happens in a forum - I know I have in the past.

Unfortunately the "fairer sex" issue crops up on many forums because they are often dominated by young men/teenagers (depending on the subject matter) who either fawn or play-up - this forum isn't too bad, but it does occur.

Then there's the whole issue of "only joking" which has a huge grey area.

Finally there's the whole thing of people not agreeing with a line of thought and feeling like your being personally attacked on all fronts - that happens all the time.

A certain fellow springs to mind.

Well at the moment i've found that the current level is very open, and allows people to post their views without fear of being banned or other silly nonsense. You are right there is a fine line, this is why i say caution should be excersized if this is to maintain a "free and fair" place (*removes Mandela accent*)

A few things spring to mind (given I've been online for a stupidly long time..)

Some net-kooks are noisy, some net-kooks are stupid, and some net-kooks are rude. But the ones who will flame you personally are the net-kooks who are noisy, stupid AND rude.

Its best to ignore these people, and bulldoze them over with pretenciousness so that they just end up embarasing themselves at the end of the day ;)

Hi Karnaugh

This is good to hear. I can add that we have never banned anybody, and we will try not to engage in this activity in future. Sometimes it is necessary to moderate (personal attacks, illegal content etc), but I know our mods understand that open discussions makes for a great forum.

Regarding you personally, I know that many of our mods have great respect for your knowledge so you might even get away with more than many other members :D

RPM

I beg to differ antowan,

Personal attack: "you ****ing idiot, your mother obviously got slapped instead of you..." (with nothing beneficial added)

instead of

Okay reply: "Sorry, but I cannot agree. It doesn't work like that IMO."

the usual way I reply: "You stupid ass! You know it doesn't work like that! Here's why :"

What may seem a personal attack to someone, isn't really (when you use my version of replying)

and yes. I love to give karnaugh uphill :D so I can confirm he gets personal attacks.

As with most things in life there is always a fine line between what is conventional and offensive. I happen to think that the level of moderation at present is satisfactory... for example where moderation has been applied I quite clearly have seen the reason stated...
