found a dead cat in the road

I was driving my friend home and just before her place we saw a dead cat in the road. We stopped and checked whether it was still alive, but alas. I picked it up and put in on the verge and went to the house which it was lying closest to, and it turns out that it was theirs.

What made me think was that someone had run this cat over, and probably knew that they had hit an animal, but either decided not to stop, or did stop and just left if there. It must have just happened because the cat was still warm. It must be heartbreaking enough to have your pet run over, but to wake up the next morning and see it carved into bits from all the cars which have ridden over it throughout the night must make it much worse.

I was wondering what you all feel about this: whether you would just leave it and drive on or stop and knock on someones door to try find who it belongs to.
 
I would have done what you did but made sure I had a bag/gloves on my hands to prevent the chance of getting and viruses!

strange, 1st time i heard of a cat getting knocked over, usually its dogs. Uhm it depends on size and type of vehicle, driver mgiht have thought he hit another pothole.

My cat was run over about a month ago, the guy didn't even stop, one of out neighbors saw it happen. I found my cat the next day on the side of the road but I think that home one might have moved him there. I'm really glad they did because I think it would have been so much worse if he had been mashed by cars.

What I can't understand is that his collar was off so I presume that some one took it, my number was on the collar and so was my wifes..... but no one phoned !
Who takes a collar off a dead cat to keep ????
 
Thanks for the responses. It felt weird picking it up, because its body was still warm but it was obviously dead. Needless to say that its owners were really upset - the lady was crying. What makes me more angry is the fact that as I stood on the verge talking to the owners of the cat, a handful of people (mostly kids in corsas and golfs with powerflow exhausts) were tanking it down the road. This is in a suburb where the speed limit is 60km/h. Not 60km/h in first gear. I can hardly imagine what I would do if I was traveling excessive speed and hit a kid, because you often see children playing on their driveways at that time.
 
I know you think the guy is a real d1ck - but have you thought from his side?

I knocked over a cat (similar situation) and it haunted me for months and months. I'm a huge cat lover and the incident did take it's toll on me as the driver.
 
It was my neighbourhood at about midnight - I did stop to check if it was alive. But it was at a greenbelt and I also has no idea who's cat it was.

Point is, not everyone that knocks over an animal is a pure d1ck through and through

Maybe you drove past that cat I hit and also cursed the speeding, drunk driver in a Golf with a freeflow :/ When that wasn't the case at all.
 
I wasn't trying to make assumptions. I started the thread to find out what others would have done. Accidents definitely do happen when animals are in the road and it is very likely to be the fault of the animal. However, I've seen so many incidents of people driving at excessive speed round corners and knocking animals over that don't have enough time to move out the way. Sometimes it is an accident that was hardly avoidable, but when the driver is doing 100km/h in a 60 zone I feel little sympathy because it could easily have been a human that ends up being killed.
 
I would love to stop. But in this day and age you get to many criminals doing all sorts of stuff.

Hence stopping for a knocked over pet == possible hijack scenario :sick:

Animals have every right to go where they want... I agree that dog's must be behind a gate but cats can climb over things so its impossible to contian them. Animals don't understand walls and gates.

Its like telling all the animals in the Kruger park to keep off the road...
 
You did a good thing by stopping. Unfortunate thing is you can't keep cats locked up and so these things happen.
