Freak Lightning at Durban Lnite - Damage

Well Last night was a serious bummer!

Who would've thought to disconnect your dstv decoder from the satellite cable, maybe its just me :(

Total damage Lnite.
-Entire alarm system blown to pieces (we have no way of disconnecting from phone line)
-All the covers over the telkom connections blown off.

Lightning struck the satellite, so DSTV decoder,surround sound system,tv all blown.

Next to the satellite was my dads Davis Vantage pro2 weather station, nice R6k system imported from US - Alas Blown to pieces, i mean pieces found on the lawn around the house.

So all in all, I now know to disconnect anthing, from a simple cable to the roof, to every piece of equipment joining each other :(

Have to say, it really was an insane lightning storm, never experienced something so insane.
 
Yowsa! Where in Durbs are you?

We're fortunate to have nearly all our hitech gear on surge protection.
 
Umhlanga Rocks, it was actually a freak of nature lnite. Yea we have everything on surge protectors, thing is, it struck the DSTV satellite, went through the satellite cable into dstv decoder, then through all the AV cables blowing things up along its way.

Then it hit the telephone line blowing up all the adsl filters, found one of the filters in pieces across the room,haha.

Never crossed my mind at all to remove the satellite cable from dstv decoder :/
 
That's crap! Well I hope you have insurance.

And FIY, you can get surge protection for your DSTV cable and phone lines.

The key with the Satellite is to get the dish mounted lower than roof level, but then again with Natal lightning there are almost no guarantees.

Or of course you could move down to Cape Town.

I do remember my Dad got it good one year, being that he is a firm believer in insurance, as he had his 5 year old computer fried and then replaced on insurance.

Awesome stuff, thanks, i will be sure to look into this because last night is working out to be quite costly and saving any equipment is GREAT.
 
Thing is, its all insured but is it not an act of god? Thus insurance don't pay?
 
That storm last night was awesome... but def touch wood that none of my stuff blew... esp since I just got a whole lot of new toys....
 
The lightning was crazy - it was so loud that sometimes it sounded like the sound coulnt not support itself - if you know what i mean - almost like the thunder clap started splattering from being too loud!....

Never experienced anything like this!.
 
More than once it sounded like the lightning had struck just outside my house and the whole house seemed to shake.... was really cool... except I had to look after my lil puppy cos he was scared... shame..
 
Up here in Gillitts it was also severe, lightning struck the hill at the back of my plot. We were mid-way thru a braai when the storm started. Hail, lightning really close, thunder was deafening. All the while me standing under the eaves with tongs and beer in hand. Awesome stuff.
 
LoL, should've put your meat on the hill, nice quick way to braai your stuff ;)

Yea, luckily i unplug my toys, xbox, pc's, ADSL router,lol ;)
 
Sounds hectic, never seen lightning that bad and haven't had anything blow yet either luckily. :)
 
Well it's not lightning related but my 25 year old Denon PMA-150 amplifier has popped.. there was smoke.. my heart sank etc;

At least the technician at the local Denon shop said it was from Eskom and their *lovely* power fluctuations, so I'm going to make insurance fit the bill!
