Free Calls for Cell C Customers

This is a crock--definitely not for me.

To qualify I need to recharge every week. I'm not changing my behavior for this. I want to stick to my current behavior and get this as an added service each weekend, no stings.

There is a catch somewhere.... /me points to telkom

Being a post paid Cell C customer........I am pissed off with this. My contract costs me R100 a month. Part of the value of that contract is 100 off peak minutes. Now everyone gets it, even prepaids who load R5 a week.

To me the value of my contract has changed! Is my current contract therefore still legally binding? Can Dominic comment please.

EDIT: I took the contract because I figured paying the R100 brought me the value of 100 minutes. Even though one could argue that I now gain 480 minutes per month, the way I see it is that I could have got the same 480 minutes on weekend for a mere R20 (R5 per week) on prepaid without paying the R100.

Nice ... if you can get through during free call periods. Where networks have done this before the free communication channels were permanently soaked up by people using it for baby monitors, peer-to-peer networking, call centre diverts, music-on-the-go, number polling, etc.

Well, try doing that with a mere 120 minutes in the weekend. Or changing sims after each 120min session. No thanks.

The youngster in the office is very impressed - he had to leave the office to stock up on CellC prepaid SIMS just in case there was a rush and shops went out-of-stock:)

He called his girlfriend straight away to pursuade her to get a CellC prepaid card as well before the weekend:-)

LOL, he isn't prepared to give her one of his stockpiled pre-paid CellC SIM cards?

My guess is that CellC will get a lot of "abusive" new users on pre-paid.

Some of these would become permanent CellC users simply because it is too inconvenient to swap simcards for week/weekend use.

CellC certainly has done something which seems as if it has created a stir.

Will Telkom react as well?

This is definitely good for the industry and prepaid users however there are few benefits for contract subscribers.

Cell C will boost their prepaid business without a doubt and grow their prepaid "user base" who will undoubtedly just have another SIM card to carry around on the weekends and spend R5 a week to use it.

If it was free calls which didnt take away your contract minutes then Vodacom and MTN would have ALOT to worry about.

It'll be interesting to see the Advertising Standards (ASASA) committee's complaints as well as their advert flighted on SABC3 with people all screaming free calls on weekends and then a tiny "Terms and Conditions Apply" seems a bit misleading. I'm sure friday is considered the average joe's assumption of the weekend and a limitation isn't mentioned either which obviously is material to the offer.

*end of my 2c*

Ja - I'd like to know too...
Once upon a time (I think it was siemens?) there was a phone that had an external sim slot - very quick to swap.... wonder if those are a thing of the past...

Does it mean that you're only able to make one 120 minute call or does the 120 minutes carry throughout the weekend? And once if you go over 120 minutes, do you get billed as per off peak rates?

Cell C's marketing strategy is always aggressive, it seems to have more short term than long term impact. I'm mean the average person will buy a Cell C sim, recharge the least amount and make those free calls (to who's ever on Cell C) during the weekend. On weekdays they switch back to their original SIM. So i don't really see the point of rolling this strategy other than to decrease Vodacom's and MTN's earnings for that period. They'll grow their subscriber 'base' but most of the time those 'SIMs' will be offline.

I hope they don't bring down Vodacom's network like what i heard they did last time :p
Terms and Conditions Always Apply!!

"Cell C says that their prepaid customers need to only recharge during the course of the week with any of the company’s airtime recharge vouchers to get the free weekend calls."

- would one have to do this every week to be eligible to make free calls to Cell C people on weekends - assuming prepaid?

I assume so. That is probably the reason they have a R5 recharge voucher.

Is Cell C now entirely on its own network? They started out having a 5 or 10 year agreement that they could use the Vodacom infrastructure where they did not have their own coverage? Has that come to an end, and if not then Vodacom nor its customers, may not be pleased.

It was a 15 year agreement AFAIK, so plenty of time left.
