so, does this mean i can load my OWN files onto this little nook and NOT pay crazy conversion fees? if so, then the DRM on this puppy doesn't seem to be an issue

If the data is free, the stuff will probably be hosted by the 3g provider and not internationally. (or at least i hope so)

That does look pretty cool, but I prefer to have my page turn buttons nearer the bottom.
re: BN device - i dont like whatever the backlit thing is. looks bright, bad for eyes and battery.
As for changing the APN on the e-sim, I think they will take it a step further. AT&T can probably specify to the roaming partners WHAT services their "phones" can use, hence it will only allow the Amazon APN to work, and Amazon APN only connects to their servers. Anything else you try will not be allowed - thats if they can govern roaming usage by some kind of access control list which Im sure is not impossible.

So VAT and import duties are excluded from the R1800 price. Still a nice price.
I ordered the Cybook Opus for R3480 all in. Expansys seem to take their time with orders so I'm still waiting for updates on the order process. Hopefully it'll ship by next week.

Update ordered on tuesday the kindle is currently at Joburg customs. The barnes and noble reader is tempting but I am still happy with my purchase.

Amazon has dropped the price for the Intl & US Kindle to $259 and seems as if that will be the only version available now.
Those who bought it earlier will get a $20 credit on their next purchase.
Now if only it offered ePub I would have seriously considered getting one.

I am so keen to get a Kindle.
A big selling point for me is the Wikipedia/Basic web access, I have read that German and UK kindle users were able to access Wikipedia only. I'm sure there will be ways around this in the future - if I could just access my gmail...
Another point I have read about the Kindle is that its not that hard to get your own PDF's onto the kindle, all you need to do is convert the PDF to a Kindle supported format and copy it over via USB. I have a lot of technical documents in PDF form that I would love to have on my Kindle.

From user reports the Kindle and Kindle DX PDF support is pretty bad. Technical docs with illustrations, code etc. wont work well.
The major downside to me is that the books you buy aren't in an open format accessible to any other device (DRM issues aside).

You peeps really have way to much money to waste on these little gadgets. The kindle is a really bad way to waste money. It uses an exclusive format that will be useless if you decide to use a different eReader in the future.
That little kindle will look downright ancient come xmas '09.

Amazon deleted Orwell books from Kindle devices
In July 2009 Amazon deleted copies of George Orwell's 1984 and Animal Farm from Kindle devices without the permission of the Kindle owners (unfortunate choice of books). This sparked a furore and Amazon explained that the books were provided by a third-party that did not have the right to sell the books. They also said they will no longer delete books in this manner, but it is interesting that their systems were written in such a way to allow it in the first place.
I found an article on Ars Technica's website that covered this debacle: Why Amazon went Big Brother on some Kindle e-books

but u missed the point. I only buy on Amazon, i love Amazon, it has what i need, its 10000% cheaper than buying in ZA, and... did i mention i like Amazon?
So I dont mind if its tied to Amazon, they will always have what I want and have the best price and service.
And, i dont work for them
