OK, thats it - I'm getting a Kindle. This was the only factor that was pending in my decision of going the Kindle route.

My friend got one of these and I must say after fiddling with it for a while, Im seriously inimpressed, it came damaged from the states, very small crack in the cheap plastic casing that he cant do anything about, and the fact that the display is not backlit i really find to be an issue.

hrm.. according to exclusive books, e.g. a typical dan brown novel(old) goes for about R177 excl. delivery. So yah this is kinda kewl.. but me thinks its still a bit step to get newer people to read. I wonder if they will have textbooks in this format though, do that and you can grab the university students early on.

Portability;

Cons:
Can't lend books to friends;
Some people desire to display their physical libraries;
Somewhat crumby interface (based on web reports);
Can only purchase through Amazon, so cheaper e-books elsewhere become irrelevant.

Questions:
What happens if it gets stolen? Can someone access your account and download every title on Amazon before you notice, and land you with a huge bill?
Will the device be blacklisted if stolen, or will the thief be able to access any stored books on the device?

The kindle was designed not to be back lit for a reason. it uses e-ink. I.e batteries last forever because of the way the page is displayed. Drawing of the page uses power, keeping the page displayed does not etc...

PDF's can be transfered to the Kindle. There is however a conversion charge of $0.99 per page/document (unsure) associated with this.

Check out the Kindle store first. Most new releases like the Lost Symbol etc are NOT available to SA. The advertised number of books also include public domain works so actual selection of books are limited.

If so, I wonder if any abusive users will be downloading, wiping and then redownloading free books all the time, just to see how much data they can use?

What they dont tell you is that there is a 40% premium on the US selling price of books. That is, if you can buy the book in the first place, as most new releases are not available in SA.

Add to this the fact that the device itself is quite fragile, and if it breaks, you can just as well stick it up your butt.

That's only if you load it using the "over the air" service where you email the PDF to your device. You can still load PDFs on for free using a USB cable.
