Free data from Vodacom using Opera Mini during the weekend

the link does not work!!!

i cannot believe the vodacom rep can't post working instructions in this thread to help us!

I can't even open the link in firefox - pathetic!

I used to have Opera 5 Beta 2, and then I reset my phone last week... and now the only version I can find is this "enhanced for vodafone" version. its a bit frustrating

I had this same issue which is why I downloaded it manually to my phone.

SMSed, got link http://vfl.vodacom.co.za/S/D?Id=blah, downloaded, works fine on my V360.... odd.

simply browse to m.opera.com/next
That should help :)

does the vc version do anything special, or is it just a case of vodacom allowing free traffic through the opera mini socket connections?
(for those that done know, opera mini doesn't download straight http traffic from a site, instead it sends a socket request through to an opera server which in turns downloads the html, compresses images, and send back to your client via the socket)

Makes Sense if VC r just giving u that socket traffic for free.
If thats the case, use the full opera desktop version and enable turbo mode (its the same thing) and use our VC 3g to connect

(just a theory...... if i'm wrong and u download a lot of stuff, sucks to be u)

Can you crack a vodacom USB modem to use a MTN sim card. I tied inserting a MTN sim card into mine and nothing happened. If you can then I'll be happy cause I can try out MTN's one day uncapped pass to see how much data I can extract in 24 Hours @ 128 kbps.

Yes! Having been without VC internet for two days, I invested in an MTN pre-paid SIM card and it works in my Huawei E272.

I use the manufacturer's software (Mobile Partner) and not VMC.

I just tried the link http://vfmini.vodafone.com/adl/Internet and it is working. I am guessing that Internet was case sensitive so was probably not working in lower case.

Thanks man, guess it might be case sensitive, I tried it again now and it did go through. It tells me that it is not compatible with my handset. Anybody on Windows mobile got a cab for me?

Thanks for the info ... will see what I can do! :)

Try searching the forum for MDMA - you can send commands with it too! (like *111# etc)

i have a HTC touch diamond 2, but apparently the application is not available for my device. What a joke! (btw, I'm typing this message using Opera Mini 5 for WM).

How frustrating! I have tried SMS'ing 3 times, I have tried entering the link directly and also no joy! Been a vodacom ONLY customer for 14 years.. As soon as my 3g expires, I will leave Vodacom. My work cell is vodacom but I don't have a choice there and I don't pay the bill. Enough is enough! Don't make promises you can't come through with...

+1
Seems that WM is "not supported" I've tried it on two of my wm phones without success :(. Anybody with a .jad file? I would like to try what Necuno suggested.

Kkkurupt, must agree... VC know there are ppl out there that don't have any alternative, but to use them, and many business users are on contracts, if they lower the rates for us prepaid customers, then they would have to do the same for the contract users, this equals a loss of revenue they are not willing to accept... since MTN lowered the OOB rates, I have been boycotting Vodacom prepaid 3G, and will only buy again if/when they reduce these horrendous rates! In the mean time I use my ADSL from work... if you think about it, the MTN OOB rates only apply to their 3G contract users, if u are a prepaid user, then u got to buy more data once a data bundle is up, so the OOB rates don't apply to prepaid... am I right? So for a prepaid user there is no reason to switch to MTN, if u on contract it's a different story!

Mr B

Nope, on a prepaid sim, you can subscribe to a monthly bundle and you can cancel or change it any time you want! Then you still get OOB rates. call 141 and off you go!

It does work... although not spectacularly.

Last night I ran out of airtime, I was literally on R0.00. But instead of recharging immediately I left it so I could test this "Free data" thing. Luckily I downloaded this "enhanced" opera earlier in the day, and it does work perfectly on my Nokia 5130xm. I also got the sms link immediately. So with R0.00 in my account I could not access mxit, or any sites through opera 4.1 which is the default browser on my phone. But on 4.2 vlive enhanced version (5 wasnt available for my phone even though I ran it a month ago...) all sites worked perfectly. So the data is indeed free.

But... try download something and you get redirected to your default broswer, which doesnt use free data. So all you can do is really just browse. No downloading at all. Nor does youtube work because that redirects to your media player.

Not that I have a problem with this free data, it really isnt of much use to me. Try browsing the full facebook site on a 2.2" screen... not fun. Its easier to use the mobile site which is +-12kb compared to 80kb. So all this free data... and I wouldnt even use a meg. If I could actually download though... then we could talk.
