I just received an sms from one of those long numbers (+2781160038049031) saying:

Dear Telkom customer, 081XXXXXXX qualified to receive a 2GB data bundle. Please reply with your email address and receive guaranteed data bundle to use from 7pm to 7am and connect with your friends, download music or browse the internet. T's & C's apply

Anyone know if this is legit? I've become so wary of responding to sms messages...

I doubt that Telkom would require you to submit additional information if they gave data away. They would just credit your account and inform you thereof. :)

It is most likely a scam. :(

I logged in to ask the exact same question. Friend of mine got the following SMS today:

Dear Telkom customer, 081... qualified to receive a 750MB data bundle. Please reply with your email address and receive guaranteed data bundle to use from 7pm to 7am and connect with your friends, download music or browse the internet. T's & C's apply

It wasn't the usual TelkomSA number that sends notifications, but from +2781160038049031 (same as yours C4Cat). My friend didn't respond because Telkom Mobile already have his email, along with home address and ID number (from RICA info and registering on Telkom website so he can manage his SIM, log in to Telkom Wifi, etc). Hopefully someone who works at TMobile sees this and does something about it! I bet many unsuspecting people will respond to that SMS with their email addresses!

I got this too. I thought it strange that they sent it to my MTN number though. I can't remember if I put that down when I signed up at Telkom Mobile. That was quite some time ago. Must have done. Why not just send it to the qualifying Telkom Mobile number instead?
