Free networks grow

We are not allowed (and do not choose to) run any commercial services over the wugs. Think of it as a lan-gaming / file-sharing bunch of IT people experimenting with new technology. A network for Hobbyists, run, and maintained by hobbyists!

IS this for personal use only or can businesses use this infrastructure for their VPNs rather than other costly methods? Whats the reliability like?

No internet or business use allowed on wug.!

You're still welcome to join thou :D

The Wugs are a community run network. People work on it in their spare time.
If a major node goes down, no-one gets paid to go fix it. It gets fixed when someone has the time.
So if you want to run your business critical applications over a hobby network, I don't want to be a customer of yours.

The WUGs do not provide commercial services. It goes against the objectives of the WUG and it is also not legally permitted.

In terms of reliability... its shocking :D the WUGs can not and will not give any guarantee of uptime. They are experimental networks running on highly congested spectrum and are not suitable for any kind of business purposes.

I live in Melrose. I have a Belkin wireless router and two D-Link 4dBi Omni-Directional roof mountable antennas ... can I do anything with this stuff :p? My networking knowledge is pathetic

If the Belkin supports client or infrastructure mode, you may be able to use it, but the omni's are only good for throwing down a long drop fortunately.

If you are serious about wanting to join, get yourself a recommended kit - You'll be much happier in the long run!

I don't have cash to spend on kit ... otherwise I would have. I'm not sure what modes the belkin supports.

^what he said^

just, we don't have trees blocking or anything, we just don't have any nodes nearby...:(

(Kempton Park)

Yeah, there is allot of trees. Come join #Kempies on irc. :) There is some planning going towards a highsite in Mooifontein :)

just to show, wugging is not just about quickly putting a little antenna in your window, lots of blood and sweat has gone into building the networks.

Ok well try and get the proper kit as listed on the wug site. An example for you, I have a R1000 cpe and my friend that also connects to the same sector as I do has got the proper kit. Both of us can do gaming, file transvers etc... but with me I get the connection lost message sometimes in COD4 and he doesnt, with me I get about 500KB/s and he gets 2MB/s. So in the long run its worth every penny and just makes sence to get the proper kit. :)

Well maybe I'll get it middle to the end of next year depending on how my company does. Is there a way to conenct to JAWUG from Melrose ... I don't have LOS to northcliff

j...some pics of the Riveria highsite dig, tower...

I would have to have been the camera man ... ;)

I was on the IRC site lastnight, and it would seem that I do not have LOS. Apparently I am close, very close, to BJU, but the antena are facing the wrong way, and we cant add another one the right way. Now I have to get on my roof and take photos of all around, and Xarion will look for me to see if I can connect somewhere else ... All very confusing to me ... thank goodness for them!!

Now just to convince the wife to climb on the roof to take the photos, but that will also be a problem, she is more afraid of hights than I am ...

*Does the fear of heights outway the need to download files ar 2mb/s? - We will see on the weekend*
