Free Socks and Proxy Server...

mikes: Its called a business

You obviously have no clue what hosting a local proxy entails and how expensive bandwidth is.

Why don't you like Clipse or his services?... :/ Clipse has done alot for the community with his business, yes... its a business. Business' have to charge people for using their services, look at Telkom. Atleast Clipse's services are affordable.

Hey Friends,

I have finally created the website for the OpenWeb! Project.

Here you will find future updates regarding the FREE Proxy and Socks servers, plus the VPN services.

I am adding authentication to the servers soon, and only people regsitered at this site will receive FREE accounts.

Thanks
MrBEEP
P.S The site is work in progress.

Hey Friends,

Due to a stroke of bad luck, someone hacked into our web hosts servers last night, and killed our site.

This will not affect the Socks / Proxy server because they are on two different servers.

So, I have changed web hosts to a more secure solution. Once it's ready, please could anyone that registered yesterday, re register. It should be up sometime today.

I do apologise.

Hello All

My first post!

I'm a little "hacked" off that someone hacked our site, BEEP and I put this together because we're tired of been F--ked by the man (you know who I mean) and it will stay up for as long as we can manage it.
I sincerely hope no-one here had anything to do with hacking our website?

Keep enjoying the service.

;)

Hey hey, finally decided to use your service and got this message when trying to visit a certain site...

Error reported by FreeProxy.

Error Message:

Either the host does not exist or the service is not available.

Action

Retry the action, using a valid Web address. Also, check the spelling of the web site and don't leave any spaces between items in the address.

o.O FreeProxy?

FreeProxy is the name of the server software.

Should be up. I connect perfectly.

Have you cleared your local cache?

Hey

I have bad news.

We have reached our bandwidth limit on the server, and cannot transfer any further for the rest of the month. I have just received notification from my Backbone provider in the states.

I can get another server running with more bandwidth, but that costs money. Would anybody be interested in donating a couple of rands? If so, you can private message me. If we raise enough I will get the server up in the next day or so.

The server will be restored on 1 September 2005 if not.

I once again apologise.

Thanks
MrBEEP

MrBEEP, your service is a great idea, and I'm sure many people have benefitted from it.

The reason you have seen such phenomenal bandwidth use is that its effectively an open proxy at present and as such is probably being raped by many other people than whom it was intended for.

What I would suggest is attempting to "formalise" it a bit more to prevent abuse of your server.
Maybe require users to register with you in some way (email/webform), and issue each registered user with their own single concurrent connection, username/password.
This would help ensure that only the users you want to have on the server are allowed.

Along with the registration, also require a minimum monthly donation to bandwidth costs - eg. R25.
For R25 from 100 users,you have R2500 or USD350+.

This means the service as a whole is supported by a small subscription revenue stream - to prevent bandwidth from bein cut off - and also you then ensure that the users you have on are in fact contributing to supporting the service.

I personally would be very happy to pay R25 pm to be able to play Guild Wars via VPN while within my cap.

I know the above suggestions may sound like a lot more admin, but I'm sure you can find ppl on this forum willing to help out on that side.

I'm sure the quality and reliability of your service will be far improved if you can find ways of making the proxy service less of an open - free for all - proxy.

While I'm on this subject -
@Clipse: What are the chances of you providing a similar, more commercial (VPN) service along the same lines - ie. a US server proxy on an unshaped port?
Basically I really like this idea for unshaped gaming while within my cap, but want to use something a bit more stable and reliable ;)
