Free Socks and Proxy Server...

I agree with lewstherin, I think for any long term availability of the service their needs to be controls in place.

I personally have really enjoyed the benefits of MrBeeps service and would be quite prepared to pay a nominal fee for using it. I think as a proof of concept so far it has worked really well.

Thank-you MrBeep for taking your own time out (and i'm sure financial commitment) to provide us with the service weve experienced so far at no cost - I think its really commendable.

Ditto
How about people prepared to pay R25-50/month for the proxy/vpn posting in this thread so MrBeep can get some idea of the number of people who would be interested in this.

Eish MrBeep get it up already. You make us depended on the service and then take it away.

Only joking. Why not post how much it will cost to run the server and let people donate.

@Clipse: What are the chances of you providing a similar, more commercial (VPN) service along the same lines - ie. a US server proxy on an unshaped port?
Basically I really like this idea for unshaped gaming while within my cap, but want to use something a bit more stable and reliable ;)

Am working on that, just currently having to siff thru price/performance ie. best latency, is taking some time. But I am looking into this.

Hey Friends,

The OpenWeb Project website is now up. In this page you will find donation details. Once we have raised enough money, I will setup the new server.

I will keep you posted re: how we are going on the website.

Addy: http://www.openweb.co.za

Thank you!!
MrBEEP

Over the last couple of days I have received alot of advice from members, and have taken them into consideration; upon which I created the following policy regarding Donation Servers:

Because this is a non-profit organization, I will make public the costs of our servers, and included bandwidth.

I have decided to put 8 members on one donation server. In other words, only those 8 members will download via that server. It will be exclusive to those 8 people!

Breakdown:

Ratio: 8:1
Bandwidth Speed: 100Mb/s Line - Backbone
Bandwidth included: 900GB's (Each user can download +- 112.5GB per month!)
Cost per month: $120

So, effectively, for every 8 people that donate +- R97.50 (at R6.50 to one dollar), we will be able to setup one exclusive donation server.

I have already ordered the first one, and have 3 people that donated.

If you would like to buy into a donation server, please visit the following link:

Please note, the FREE server will be operational again from 1 September 2005.

Kind Regards,
MrBEEP

I don't get why pplask me that all the time too, what this weird bank that requires the account holder name? I just put whatever I like at name always.

Hi MrBEEP,

Might I suggest making servers with higher contention ratios?

That 100mbit link will be fast enough to handle 200 512k users, even with everybody downloading at once. Obviously the monthly 900 GB would get depleted very quickly.

How about a ratio of 30:1? That would give each user 30 GB per month. Not many people have uncapped accounts and after they are capped, they won't be able to use your service. Thus if a user has a 30 gig account, maybe he could pay $120 / 30 = $4 per month?

Even higher ratios servers could be established. Some people only have shaped 3 gig accounts who want to use unshaped bandwidth for online gaming. To have a server full of 3 gig users, the ratio would be 300:1.

You wouldn't necessarily have to have different servers with different ratios, just combine all the users onto one server and give them a monthly bandwidth allowance equivalent (or less) to what their normal shaped monthly bandwidth allowance is.

I still think you should make some sort of profit though. I would be willing to pay R50 per month, or even more to convert a 30 gig shaped account into unshaped (as opposed to $4 = R26 per month).

That's my 2 cents.

Hmm ok a real post from me for a change

The main reason why we would use beeps server would be for p2p related, since http is fast already.

I have 2X 30gb accounts and I'm screwed.. like 3gb left on my last one.. and its not even close to the end of the month. and i've been having sucky shaped bandwidth.

So I I'd say make it at least 80gb per user, but that should be ok for the "average" user.

Agreed.

My point was that once you're capped, you can't connect to MrBEEP's server. So it would be pretty pointless to get allocated 80 or 100 gigs per month, when you can only use 30 gigs or less.
You're not buying extra bandwidth per month from MrBEEP, you're merely converting your shaped international bandwidth to unshaped.

Sure, have a server where users pay more for higher usage, be it because you've got an uncapped account or strung a couple of 30 gig accounts together, but I think it would be more efficient to offer servers with higher ratios, so that bandwidth is not wasted.

Take a person with a 10 gig account for example, he will be paying R97.50 and only be able to use 10 gigs till he's capped, thus wasting 102.5 gigs.

Its my understanding that once u have authentication in place you can simple set a limit to the ammount of bandwidth , or speed of a connection to the socks server can be, for gamers such as myself this could be alot better...

Hmmm yes Keep the 8:1 option
and offer 90:1 option (10gb at approx 1mb/s) $1.3*6.5=R8.6=+-R10
and offer 30:1 option (30Gb at approx 3mb/s) $4*6.5=R26=+-R30
obviously if you hav 512k connection u won't get 1mb/s
and 3gb cap =3gb cap

You can keep the extra money if you round the numbers (nearest ten) to maintain servers and allow for future shortfalls in payment

I realise you would have a problem getting 90 ppl to pay the moneys in so only start the server if you get 90 ppls money...ppl who pay need to be patient and understanding Overpayment should be welcomed to fund the project and get servers going.

thats my 50c

Idea how about a locally hosted server that links to the international one

local bypasses international capping and international-local servers link bypasses the shaping.

Obviously could become much more expensive but worth a look into ???

not ganna help me on iburst anyways

Hey Friends,

I have taken all suggestions into consideration and have made a second option:

Option 2:

Ratio: 16:1
Bandwidth Speed: 100Mb/s Line - Backbone
Bandwidth Included: 900GB's (Each user can download +- 56.25GB's per month!)
Cost per month: $120
Cost for user: R49 per month
Visit to donate:

Thanks
