Skeptik, with all due respect, you're suffering form conspiracitis.

Agreed Vodacom3G - some people need to get a life and stop watchiong so many spy movies - must be where they get all these crazy conspiracy theories from. Or maybe they just hate Vodacom so badly that they have to dream up all these sort of issues to try and discredit them.

Ag shame, we should all feel sorry for such a pathetic case.

Well, I don't care how they do it. If you do something illegal or you "rape" the network then they should be able to get hold of you.

COuldn't agree more, Piesang

So, the implication is that RPM is spying on forumites. Knowing RPM and his (and this forum's) standing in the industry, I find it quite a loathsome suggestion.

Much easier to track the usage, in real-time, directly on our networks.

So as I said in the other thread on this topic, Skeptik has extended his normal dislike for Vodacom a bit to far.

Seems to belong more in the foil hat realm than the reality the rest of us inhabit. Even though it might be technically possible I'm assuming most of Vodacom wouldn't be bothered enough to put in the effort anyway.:)

The new interception laws dictate that a network provider must be able to track a user on it's network.

But the starting point would have to be a supplied ID of some sort, in this case (as you stated above) myADSL would have to receive a court order to provide the IP of the poster at that point in time (and I'm pretty sure myADSL is not logging this info). From this the network provider can be determined and then, if it is a cell-user, we can determine the cell-number.

From what I understand about the new law is that the networks mus be able to track users, but can only implement it under a court order. If they are doing without the necessary documents then they are acting illegally.

There as to be some part of tracking for the billing purposes.

So we have to find where the black ends and the grey starts.

... I'd imagine the database Vodacom3G's drawn up simply consists of high traffic users, with no regard to whether or not they are forum members.

Basically a wolf in wolf's clothing among a flock of sheep:D Anyway, as Piesang said the privacy issue doesn't come up when illegal activities are concerned.

I'm no expert on the matter, but I believe you need to keep some historical information, to be able to answer questions such as "Two weeks ago, who did this?" I think I once heard a period of 6 months.

I'll ask the legal guys for clarity.

Sounds entertaining. :D Could you backbill them if they were on contract? Or maybe even on prepaid?
Only in theory. In practice they would have a whole flock of angry customers leaving them because their balance suddenly declined more than the usual.
This post raises some questions. Should a supposed rep. for Vodacom be using the forum to gather a database of cell numbers? ie. See who posts something he doesn't lagree with, then monitor his activities through the Vodacom network.

This will definitely raise some privacy issues. I doubt whether maintaining such a list would pass any challenge under the data protection act.

Just who is being tracked here??
No issue here even if he was being monitored. He posted here on a PUBLIC forum WITHOUT being coerced. Vodacom has every right to track his illegal activities after it was pointed out to him using their own network. Not that this is the case, they merely monitored a range of numbers using far more than the usual. Not that I believe him for a second, even if he was using hsdpa on full speed it would take one hour to transfer only 772MB or 18.1GB/day. He would need at least 5 devices to transfer 90GB/day assuming he got full speed which is highly unlikely without any signal disappearance which is also unlikely. With a good signal at least 95% of the time he would still only manage 408MB an hour or with 10 devices 95GB/day. Somehow I think he would stand out as a sore thumb.
Skeptik got carried away a bit it seems..... Not even sure how he could read any forum involvement in my comments?
I think his id says it all.

If you need a court order to track users, what about those look 4 me service from vodacom? Did the parents applied for a court order before they sign up with vodacom for this service? Just curious......

with sim cards being so inexpensive (hey big word for me was going to use cheap but could'nt spell it) you could change every day, get a new ip addy from 3g, or as i understand it adsl does change you ip addy now and again and and, catch my drift, then i hop on the forum via work (firewalls, NAT, and and), hey vodacom is going to run out of paper before they going to track you down.

effort VS return ...nope, not worth it.

abusers on same ip addy, yip i say nail them.

the rest, storm in a tea cup i say.

According to Vodacom3g, certain forumites are being tracked, presumably by watching their posts. Also, their cell numbers are being collated.

This raises questions about forum privacy. This is supposed to be an anonymous forum for a start! Also, if you use a SIM card from a particular network, be it Vodacom or any other, does that give them the right to track your activities??

I'm very uncomfortable with the idea that this type of activity is taking place. I don't have anything to hide, but we need to be aware of what is going on and that it is possible. So if I say "Vodacom sucks", the Vodacom rep on MyADSL here can track my post and link it to a cell number.

Added to this, the various reps often ask for us to PM a name and cellnumber to try and help with problems. Is that list also being used for some purpose?

Ag asseblief. .. gee my krag. What a conspiracy theory.

Explain to us how VC can track my cell number from my comments on my ADSL. I don't post via cell phone if you think that is a way to do it. So I should be relatively safe and can blast Vodacom as much as I want to - or maybe they can trace my ip no on telkom internet (we know they own half of VC) and link it to an e-mail addy and check the logs when I phoned telkom cause my phone was out of order  - hmmm could work!

As for tracking abusers - I say do it.. they can do it on their network with no help from either my ADSL or Telkom - they do have bandwidth monitors I'm sure.

Skeptik... relax man :)

As far as I understand it is contract between the phone company and a parent and "a phone" that the child can or can not choose to use.

By using the phone the child accepts the conditions that go with it. There is an acceptance by default.

AFAIK you get assigned a new IP every time you make a new 3G/GPRS connection. Of course assuming you're using the same device Vodacom could probably track you by IMEI number even if you're using different sims. But somehow I doubt they'd bother doing any of this to start with.

.

True but then again if they've been getting their service for free are they really the customers Vodacom would want anyway? And I don't think they could have unwittingly got free internet anyway.

Correct thats they way I understand it. A 3G or GPRS/EDGE , (data card/ cell connection) has a dynamic IP address, it pulls it from a range of address that vodacom has everytime you connect to the internet, so to track someone is going to be a mean feat.

V3g was probably reffering to tacking the high users thru that APN. but to corralate cell number and IP address, aint gonna work with alot of xtra resources that I am sure VC would rather use some where else..

( good idea for a book though..)

Think that was what he was referring to, and as you say just because something is technically possible doesn't mean its worth the effort to actually do it, or that Vodacom3G actually has nothing better to do than hunt down forumites who are nasty to him. :D

well how VC gonna know which number belongs to who..?? BATS and icap dont have names.. just numbers...

anyway still think its a good book hehehe

Your ISP can monitor every single transaction of your internet connectivity very easily. They are easily able to monitor who is accessing the myadsl website and even see your post when you hit the submit button on myadsl. The same goes for every other unencrypted web page you submit information to. So my suggestion, if you are paranoid about stuff like this and don't want your ISP to have any idea of which sites you visit, your internet habits etc run a secure encrypted tunnel.
