Free WiFi Internet access in SA

Its pathetic.

Some of the managers of these establishments don't even know that they have free WiFi Internet access for their customers.

I went to a number of branches of McDonalds trying to connect to WiFi so I could download my offline maps on my Lumia. What a waste of my time and my R12 on a milkshake I could have done without. Each of the branches either didn't know they have free WiFi or how to connect to it once I told them and could see it on my phone.

Wimpy. Forget it. Same story. The branch I went to had the WiFi sign up for a couple of weeks. So, I went to enquire and the person in charge there told me he doesn't know how it works. The following week the sign was gone.

But, Mugg & Bean? Top marks.

Cascades has their own free wireless you can access anywhere in the shops wish other shopping centres had wireless everywhere instead of only by the eating places.

That's pretty cool. Much better than random [single] establishments offering free wifi.

Limits?

What do you think is reasonable?
Time based isn't great.
100MB is enough for ~30min
250MB for an hour, and the same per hour after that of the expected customers stay in your establishment.

Hotels should offer more, coffee shops less, etc...

Some places have ridiculous 20MB limits.
Others have uncapped, unshaped 10Mbps lines :D
 
I use my MWeb account with it besides the usual McDonalds etc freebies. Over all though, when the signal works its great.. but in malls i find the signal is like a mirage.. it doesn't work and you are better off using gprs. :p Someone contact them and get proper radio engineering planning done as the mall sites suck.

Theres no limits that I have seen on the Cascades wireless plus Coffeeberry inside there also has no wireless restrictions that I have seen.

Use both depending where I am inside :D
 
bit of a resurrection - I'm in Blairgowrie (JHB) for the morning and need free (decent) wifi.
Anyone know which coffee shops offer this?

Maybe ask at the new place next to the car park on the corner of hillcrest and Conrad? Can't remember the name, Jed is the owner I think.
