Can someone recommend a free alternative to VMware? I'd like to run Win 98 on XP, but don't want to spend $200 for VMware.
I've had a look at VirtualBox, which is freeware, has anyone had experience with this product?

Yes, and its an excellent product, especially version 3. Its actually open source and supported by IBM, not just freeware :)

VirtualBox is the best free Type 2 hypervisor available. Its better than MS Virtual PC (just crap) and VM Server (bloated junk, but better than MS VPC). VM Workstation is the best, but its not free. If you build a lot of machines, and do a lot of testing then its good. For casual use its overkill....

A cool feature of VMStation 6.5 is that you can do an automated install of Windows :)

Virtual Box on desktops/laptops and vmware server on my server :)
Run all my SAP systems with the above combo..
