French Elections 2017

Quick resume on terrorism.

Le Pen wants to strip of their nationality all the S file people and expel them without a court sentence. (It's absolutely impossible to expel your own citizen or to strip him of his nationality even in court and the S file includes in major part Greenpeace people and eco warriors more than islamists).

Macron answers that the answer is to work on preventing radicalism and to identify it surgically. That 60% of the terrorists weren't on the file and that anyway they're suicide bombers, they don't exactly care.

She's basically questioning Macron from what I get, and got ridiculous on terrorism. She was better on economy.

All the commenters agree that she never speaks in depth and just attacks Macron to make him lose his cool.

From the few short videos I've seen, it seems to be exactly that.

On justice matters they're pretty much both really bad.

She clarifies her position on the Euro.

People would use the franc, while international companies would trade in euros.

At the same time, a newspaper leaks an email sent by the Russia funder who's an advisor of Putin to Le Pen's advisor and link with Russia. This email shows an example of what statement the Russians would like to see from the FN on Crimea...

Now she links Euro and unemployment. Except that the unemployment rate was higher than now from 1993 to 1999 reaching 13% in 1997.

She also says that in any case France will be ruled by a woman, her or Merkel (she speaks constantly of Macron being Germany's lapdog).

British economy has never been so good than since Brexit. Macron debunks it again.

I start to wonder if she's paid to lose the debate...

From the economist's correspondant in Paris:

Two hours in, and Macron is giving a masterclass in how to debate with populists: courtesy, tenacity, logic and facts #Debat2017*

Misogynist!

She accuses Macron of having an account in Bahamas (never heard of in the news and she doesn't present proofs).

He replies: "The party of the scandals, it's yours. The party of the people who refused to be heard by judges, it's yours."

So you moan and want Zuma to resign because he's corrupt. But when it's another country, you support the most corrupt candidate ?

A bit of double standards here...

When Macron starts on Le Pen's scandals, she backtracks of speaks of France being invaded.

It's actually sad how bad she is in face to face debate.

Even the FN Internet forum is filled with "please help", "I can't wait to the topic to change, she's lame on this one", "can't she answer the questions ?".

Not exactly new, that. Her supporters (especially on here) would be in a spittle-flying rage if candidates in SA, UK or the US were proposing her economic policies, but she's anti-immigrant so none of that matters to them. I mean she wants to nationalise banks and have government subsidise more people!

First major reaction, Mélenchon's spokesperson says that Fn is just no way and calls for voting Macron.

Until now they were saying that both are as bad.

First poll on the debate. 63% Macron won it, 34% Le Pen

In addition she seems completely drunk. That thing as a president...

Decided, I vote Macron.

Good on you.

Yanis Varoufakis endorses Macron in French presidential race: The Greek ex-finance minister wrote that it was a ‘veritable mystery’ why leftist leaders had not yet endorsed Macron.

Varoufakis backs France’s Macron, ‘the only one who tried to help Greece’

Greece’s Yanis Varoufakis has blasted French left-wingers’ “scandalous” reluctance to endorse Emmanuel Macron, recalling his lonely attempt to help the Greek government during its epic standoff with the “Troika”.

Of course they're homophobes, too.

Marine Le Pen’s niece ‘guarantees’ gay marriage repeal if she becomes president

Maréchal-Le Pen, who last year said that same-sex marriage would “open the door to polygamy”, has made the guarantee that her aunt, who is through to a Presidential run-off, would repeal same-sex marriage if she is elected.

“It will not be the first priority, but … [repealing gay marriage] is a promise that we will stick to, and I will personally guarantee that this bill is demolished,” the MP for Vaucluse told BFMTV.

Far-right French politician Marine Le Pen, who suggested she would temporarily step aside as the leader of the party last week, had already pledged to repeal same-sex marriage.

The number 87 proposal for Le Pen’s candidacy says same-sex marriage will be repealed.
