Frogfoot Gpon FTTH Fibre Performance

Good day All

Frogfoot would like to take this opportunity to clarify the nature of issues it is currently experiencing in Port Elizabeth and George, and additionally, to provide detail around the causes, and action plans to mitigate these as soon as it practical to do so.

There are 3 specific and individual problems which will be detailed separately below.

(1) Port Elizabeth longhaul capacity problem

(2) Port Elizabeth (Walmer area) instability

(3) George longhaul capacity problem

(1) Port Elizabeth longhaul capacity problem

--------------------------------------------

Frogfoot acknowledges it has experienced congestion at peak usage windows for its customers in Port Elizabeth.

The cause for this was poor planning of backhaul capacity to carry traffic from Port Elizabeth to major metros on Frogfoot's side, as well as higher and faster than expected growth in the Port Elizabeth region.

The capacity was however upgraded on 2019-11-11 and the congestion is thus resolved.

We ask that you please run a speed test and if you are experiencing further issues, please inbox us and we will investigate further.

(2) Port Elizabeth (Walmer area) instability

--------------------------------------------

Frogfoot acknowledges that the Walmer area in Port Elizabeth was, and is, at a higher risk of being impacted.

The cause for this is an internal process error at Frogfoot that resulted in inadequate backhaul protection for Frogfoot's node in the Walmer area, as well as a higher than usual incident (fibre breaks) frequency on the current, single backhaul servicing the Walmer node.

As a standard, Frogfoot builds its network such that there is redundant backhaul links that services a node. In the Walmer case, as mentioned, there was an oversight. When realised, Frogfoot immediately actioned the implementation of a redundant backhaul. This is being fast tracked and Frogfoot hope to have it installed as soon as possible.

Additionally Frogfoot is investigating how to mitigate the higher that usual count of fibre breaks on the current backhaul.

(3) George longhaul capacity problem

------------------------------------

Frogfoot acknowledges it is currently experiencing congestion at peak usage windows for its customers in George.

The cause for this is a planned upgrade with a third provider that should have, as a standard, provided the required capacity. This however failed when the third party informed us that they did not have the capacity.

Frogfoot immediately invoked mitigating action to find alternate capacity. The options for providing sufficient back haul capacity from George to the major metros (where interconnecting takes place) is unfortunately limited.

Frogfoot did however manage to secure capacity but it requires civil works (trenching) and landlord approvals before implementation can start. This process is in an advanced stage and the current estimated start date is 19 November which will run for about a week of working days before the capacity can be brought into production. Frogfoot is actively trying to push to bring these dates forward. Updates will be provided if improved dates can be achieved.

Frogfoot is reviewing its internal process to incorporate the vulnerabilities identified and related to the PE and George congested events, third party supplier capacity, and the general planning around backhaul capacity. We hope that this will minimise similar future occurrences.

Regards,

Team Frogfoot

After sending clear written emails explaining what the problem is, with screenshots of times etc, over many weeks span:

Vox called yesterday morning:
"Is your internet still off sir, because we see it's on now. Problem resolved?"

Vox call this morning:
"We did a speedtest this morning and we see you're getting full speed, 100mbps. Problem resolved?"

Holy cr@p that's irritating. You better off getting no feedback from Vox.

Thank you for the reply. Will forward on to folks in our area.
This means George is only looking at working internet 2-3 weeks from now, if no further delays.

sucks being pioneers, but it is what it is i guess, at least we know, telkom had decades to get their network going.

True that.
Though I would argue that installing a 5-6gb link and then selling the service to hundreds of houses doesn't add up...

Either greed overselling capacity by a huge margin at the expense of their clients, (with new clients being added every day - I see them in our neighbourhoods and have talked to the home owners - even though there's clearly not enough capacity as per above.)
..or no one is in charge of planning these rollouts, with clients having to tell them that there's a problem.

Not sure which is worse.

I agree with you. To compare a similar price point. This would be the same as your DSTV decoder buffering and rebooting randomly every night from 7pm to 10pm for the month after you buy it. The same time you want to chill with your family and watch your shows in the evening.

FIBRE TO THE HOME Frogfoot. People use it when they are @ home and to relax, watch show etc!!!!!!!
These aren't corporates.

They don't order Fibre to the home to have month's buffering and irritation and high blood pressure.
I'm sorry but your apology is lack lustre and BS. If I did my day job, and ran my business like you do, I would have no clients in my line of work.

You are screwing up your brand, royally and undoing 20 years of good press.

Edit: Conack, to make matters worse, Vox owns the Frogs. So dude let's hope Vox infrastructure has nothing to do with planning @ FF otherwise we are all scr$wed.

don't slit throat when neck sticking out

  • Haha
Reactions: Yuu
don't slit throat when neck sticking out

Yeah. Last time I checked Frogfoot and Vox weren't exactly public benefit organisations.
Providing open access for the improvement of society and 'cause it makes them feel warm and fuzzy inside.
Not for return on investment. :crying::crying::crying:

"don't slit throat when neck sticking out"
Thanks Wingnut771 for reminding me of my manners, you are correct. That was harsh.

At the current rate of degradation we'll have solid red blocks of pure packetloss soon enough

Frogfoot in PE down yet again. What is the ETA on resolving the infrastructure oversights?

@Frogfoot Fibre I made an application for your fibre via Home-Connect about a month ago and they have provided me no feedback WHATSOEVER about the progress. Call centre or website provides no updates. Can I change my ISP now before you activate the fibre?

Just an update incase anyone thinks the situation is any better because we're not complaining.

Waiting for the backhaul upgrades but in the meanwhile...

Seeing more and more houses getting fibre in our area while there's no capacity to carry them.

Isn't overselling a product to unsuspecting clients for this long getting borderline illegal? These people are signing up and paying for a service that Frogfoot cannot deliver.

I really hope the Frogs over compensate and give you guys enough extra backhaul to last years. This sucks. No reduction in fee. 1+ months now. o_O

They should just install 100 Gbics's everywhere first off and take the financial knock as it takes them so long to upgrade by the time they live with the fix it will be obsolete already.

Are you trenching from George from Cape Town Town.:ROFL::ROFL: :X3:
