From ADSL2+ to ADSL_G.dmt

Port reset solved my problem after having to explain to the stupid bitch that my line has been on 10Mbps for 3 years already and that 8Mbps isn't acceptable, then she claims 10Mbps is a new product that was only launched last year :wtf:

Very strange. Why would this be happening the past few days? Can't help but wonder if they aren't trying to curb their exchange/network congestion problems by silently altering port profiles to save bandwidth? Only those who notice/need the 10Mb then phone in asking for a reset. Hmmm

Doubt it, never had congestion issues on my exchange and it is running off a fibre backbone so I doubt we'll be seeing any soon

Same just happened to my line, went from a solid 10Mb on ADSL2+ with 24db SNR Margin to 8Mb on G.DMT with 13.5db SNR Margin.

So something is surely up. I jokingly said to [-]the Telkom aunty[/-] Promise that Telkom was probably "loadshedding" me or the exchange which resulted in the change from ADSL2+ to ADSL_G.dmt. She didn't really seem to get it but politely laughed nonetheless :/ I heard the crickets.

My thoughts as well, hence my failed "loadshedding" joke attempt.

Yip, there's probably a few poor sods sitting on ADSL_G.dmt without even knowing it. Dodgy. . .

adsl modulation type g.dmt(adsl 1) can handle up to 10mbps, if configured correctly on the correct equipment

the dslams are set to assign the synchronisation profile automatically according to the line quality. (PS manually assigning a fixed profile gives better/stable line stats!!)

if for some reason your line quality dipped the dslam could automatically assign a "more suited" profile according to what it calculates to be the best for your line at the time. this sometimes gets stuck and does not jump back again. a port OR a card reset can fix this

Which DSLAMS are set to assign the synchronization profile automatically according to line quality? Sounds like you're genuinely talking out of your arse mate

It's going to take a hell of drop in quality to drop my line below 10Mbps on ADSL2+:
Downstream Upstream
SNR Margin:
25.0 6.5 db
Line Attenuation:
16.8 9.0 db
Data Rate:
10240 999 kbps

There's about 600-700m of copper between me and the exchange

This also the first time in the 3 years that I've been on 10Mbps that this has happened

ADSL2+ actually does this quite well, Telkom are just to backwards to charge everyone the same price for the ADSL port and let the line quality and distance from the exchange determine your speed like telecoms operators do overseas.

They are also too backwards to offer 20/24Mbps ADSL2+ which their current ADSL2+ DSLAMs can handle.

all of them.

your maximum sync speed is what you pay for, if it cant handle that it will sync at a lower speed. general knowledge, mate

many things can happen. for example:

it takes is one careless engineer that doesn't work properly on the krone block while working on a line of another subscriber...

No, it does not automatically assign a preset synchronization profile according to line quality. Telkom has preset profiles - the ones I know include 1Mbps, 2Mbps, 3Mbps, 4Mbps, 6Mbps, 8Mbps, and 10Mbps. Now if for example your line is set to 10Mbps PROFILE on Telkom's side, and your line attenuation or noise levels are inadequate to support that profile, then the modem will simply sync at the highest attainable rate WITHIN that very profile. This is not a distinct profile at all - it could be an arbitrary number like 8352 kbps, but still on a 10mbps profile - it did not magically adjust to Telkom's "next best" profile, at all, and you will still be billed according to the profile set for your account on Telkom's side.

To be honest I think we're just arguing past each other, but this is because you interchanged "sync profile" with "max attaintable rate", when they are not the same thing - "max attainable rate" is not a distinct profile, but an arbitrary sync rate determined by line conditions, and the profiles are not determined automatically based on line quality -- as you said yourself: those are fixed, on Telkom's side, and setting a lower one may often help with stability where the modem would otherwise choose an over-ambitious rate

At 1am and a port recreate fixes it? Me thinks not.

Hey buddy

I have just had the same issue! Just after midnight, around 00:15 my ADSL2+ dropped to GMT. Had a very nice stable 10mb and now it cannot sync higher than 8mb. I have rebooted numerous times to no avail :(

Phone Telkom and ask for a port recreate

ok I might be wrong, what ever, seems like we are saying the same thing to me.

I have created sync speed profiles on the dslam equipment, each have their own SNR values etc. that you enter on the dslam software.

the subscriber pays for 4 mbps, if it cant handle 4mbps it will sync at a lower speed.

oh I see what your saying, sorry hangover. it doesn't do it magically btw, its a setting, if it cant do best effort it will attempt the next profile, each profile has its own attenuation and snr settings from x to y on the dslam side. I would advise to request it set to the closest profile. this auto sync business isn't cool for a line that's not 100% stable, it will constantly renegotiate best effort which I have seen can cause problems.

it will attempt best effort within the profile scope, then goto the next one etc.

news you can choose to use or lose!?

My connection was synchronising comfortably @ 10mb/s then on or about the 2nd February 2015 thing went pear shaped. My profile was switched from ADSL2+ to ADSL_G.dmt and now I can only synchronise at 8mb/s max.

What do I have to do to change my profile back to ADSL2+ ? I have tried 10210 but that was a waste of time.

Any ideas anyone?

Select ADSL2+ in your router.

If that fails to sync it means your port was changed to a older pert of the dslam that only supports G.dmt or your actual profile settings are stuffed causing you to only get sync on G.dmt.

Best way would be to phone them or pm telkom rep here or chat from the Telkom website.

Don't worry about the stats now as the line stats on G.dmt vs ADSL2+ are different.

I tried changing the DSL modulation mode to ADSL2+ but the connection status remains 'Initializing'. Until Telkom changes by profile at the exchange I will be stuck on ADSL_G.dmt.
