So somewhere between Thursday and Saturday I went from syncing comfortably at 10 Mbps in ADSL2+ mode to syncing slightly more comfortably at 8 Mbps in ADSL_G.dmt mode :erm: I cannot syn in ADSL2+ mode anymore :(

I haven't phoned Telkom - I know, I probably should but I thought I'd start here first. It's easier and I'm lazy, do the maths :o

Why Telkom, why

Anyone know why/what/who/when/anything? HILLBROW (RHBW) Exchange 011 640 xxxx.

:(

You guys really want me to phone Telkom, don't you?

Lol. Sounds like something has been changed at the exchange, like a profile change, or prehaps they connected you to a different port or DSLAM. You could try calling Telkom, but I don't know if their call centre people will understand what you are talking about. Tell them G.DMT, and they'll think you're swearing them.

From what I remember, I think G.Dmt only supports up to 8mbps, while ADSL2+ supports up to 24mbps. Telkom have obivously only enabled profiles up to 10mbps.

Have you tried disabling G.DMT on your router, and only leaving ADSL2+ enabled? If it doesn't sync, then there has been some sort of hardware change at the Exchange.

Firstly, thanks for taking the time to reply :)

That's what I'm worried about i.e. call them and say what exactly? The last time I spoke on the phone about SNR Margins and Attenuation to a Telkom dude on the other side of 10210 I got a whole heap of silence in return. Seems like I'll have to apply the "keep phoning back until you speak to someone who knows what you're talking about" method.

Yip, previously I had an attainable rate of 20-something Mbps and now it's 10 Mbps (which I was syncing at a few days ago).

Yes and it simply won't sync at all. Seems like this one is out of my control

What about ADSL2 not 2+?

PS: ADSL2+ takes a bit longer to sync than ADSL (GDMT)

All the modes are enabled by default - does it automatically sync to the "right" one or is it forced to sync to a particular one? I only tried forcing ADSL2+ mode which it definitely can't sync at but used to before. I'll try only ADSL2 later tonight (pointless doing this over teamviewer).

The call center is going to have a hard time understanding what you're talking about.

This happened to friend of mine, later we discovered they have done this to reduce congestion on the exchange. (everyone was synced to a lower profile)

The only problem with this is sometimes they down sync people to the middle tier without offering lower prices, basically stealing from people, very disappointing.

That's pretty much what's stopping me from phoning :o I can see it ending badly (for myself).

Great :( So I've possibly been loadshedded by Telkom

I can confirm this is pointless. I just remotely broke my own internet :D Oh well... I'll have to see later :/

Why don't you contact @TelkomZA on the social media team? I would say this is up their ally?

I'll give that a try, thanks. I'm old school though, so I'll phone first :D

/heads home to unbreak the interwebs

Well colour me surprised :o That was relatively quick and painless 10 minutes. Seems from Telkom's side I was on a 10 Mbps profile so no problem where they're concerned. A port refresh and Wala! I'm syncing on 10 Mbps. One for the so much wow case files.

A pleasant surprise from the Telkom call centre and a BIG Thank You to Promise for pressing the magic PortReset™ button.

Cool stuff, good for you. For that reason alone - doing port resets - I migrated my line to Afrihost. (OK the good price was another reason). You can reset the port yourself via the online Clientzone or the mobile app. (A 3rd reason was the ability to run line test via the Clientzone).

Port resets do tend to sort out a lot of issues. Don't know why I didn't tell you to do that in the first place.

Ah Afrihost, I almost switched to them when jumped off the mweb ship at the beginning last year. The whole "manage your own line" concept really appealed to me and still does. Then again, I've had a handful of ADSL problems since I got it in 2010 so I guess if my experience worsens then I'll jump the TI ship for greener Afrihost pastures.

I'll go one step back and wonder why I didn't think of that in the first place :o

Thanks for the help, Saajid

Yesterday my mode changed mysteriously from ADSL_G.dmt to ADSL2+ but only Speedtest worked. What next from Telkom? Never a dull moment.

Ooooh. If it changed from ADSL_G.dmt to ADSL2+ then that's a good thing ...I think. Are your synchronisation stats better? Syncing at a higher speed maybe?

I had the same story here in Wilro Park (011 768) last week - my sync mysteriously switched from ADSL2+ to GDMT - gave their call center a ring and they said I was already on 10mb profile. Asked them to reload the port and then it was all good again

No it's still syncing at 7Mb/s. I'm too far from the exchange to get 10Mb/s. Maybe the change to ADSL2+ and the collapse of all data transfer except for Speedtest was just a coincidence? Everthing seems to be OK again though this morning. But why can Telkom not simply provide a stable and reliable service? After all it's not exactly cheap!

Maybe Telkom are up to something... Surely there's more of this going on.

Ah ok. Stable and reliable? Telkom? Not so sure those all go together in a sentence :D

Same just happened to my line, went from a solid 10Mb on ADSL2+ with 24db SNR Margin to 8Mb on G.DMT with 13.5db SNR Margin.
