Frost spec now best mage DPS?

our mage plays fire or arcane, so dont think so
Im doing arcane, and I love it, but yesterday one of our better skilled guildies mentioned that frost is top dps atm :/
I have to admit, compared to others my mage dps has being lame. When I was level 84 a evel 83 dk was cleaning me. I was doing about 6k dps he was doing around 7.5k dps. I simply dont have the mana to keep up with the dk.
Arcane is great and it does the damage, but for very very short bursts. I cant sustain the dps for very long and a lot of these dg fights are long fights. I think until arcane has seriously potent T11 kit I wont have the mana pool to handle arcane for long.
I dont like fire. Never have

Haven't logged in for over a month so really couldn't tell you. I've always been arcane so will stick with after I've levelled up and see how it goes.

From my short mage experience I would go for Frost and this is why:
. I have a problem with the Hot streak procs. They are to dependant on lucky crits to hit in a row.
. Arcane does massive burst damage but it can't be sustained due to the mana cost and increase on Arcane blasts.
. The frost procs are insane.
I have had massive fun with frost since they changed it and I personally do way much more DPS in frost than in any other spec. But this might have to do with me just playing frost since level 10 and know the spec inside out, or just the lack of understanding the rotations on the other specs
Be it as it may, I can keep up with the best of DPS in frost spec and have out DPS'd Arcane and Fire mages on some/most fights.
I think it comes down to what you want to play. If you want to play a certain spec and really know how to play it good you will be good at it vs other specs.
Also the other benefit with frost is the slow/cc effect you have in heroics

I can tell you now, Fire is the best spec. Well now on low level gear.

Fire worked out best for me. Mana still a bit of an issue, but use Mage Armour when on mobs and switch to Molten on bosses so you won't have too much down time.
Stack crit though...need lots of it. Crit and Intellect.

It all depends on a persons gear, skill with spell rotation and play style.
You can probably find a frost Mage that has higher damage output than a fire Mage and visa versa.
Since you have access to dual spec, try both. You will probably find there are situations where one is better than the other, or you just have more fun with one.

Im happy with the frost spec. Im now top dps in dg`s and hc`s again after feeling a little down. I was averaging around 6-7kdps with arcane now I am up to 10k+ with Frost. Ive learnt you only really get good dps outta frost if you spam deepfreeze as often as possible. Those crits are my sexiest
My duel spec is pvp and pve, so theres not much room to move in.

Sounds about right. I assume its covered in the "etc" bit in your boss fights, but dont forget to coldsnap
I spam the heck outta frostfire orbs on trash and sometimes (deppending on aggro), frostfire orb+ icy veins+blizzard on trash if the boss is still far away. Ill only use icelance if I know its going to crit on a proc or target is frozen.
Our talent tree`s are almost the same. Except I took the points out of reactive barrier and put them into enduring winter. From what I understand, the barrier only procs if you are not casting, and since I am always casting I went the mana regen way.
Our glyphs are pretty much the same.
I see your kit is better than mine. Im busy waiting for more people to get a clue about what happens in hcs, so I mostly level my alts. Ill start running for kit in a couple of weeks time again.

Think the big question is what is your sustained dps over a long fight? Or how is your downtime in instances, no mana issues? My wife still hits ~15k in arcane spec but her mana pool is a serious problem!

We got 2 frost and 1 fire mage in our raids and they were doing about the same dps on a fight like Valiona & Theralion, so I'm not personally sure which one is better.
But on WOL:

Looking at the rankings it seems on average Fire is doing more dps than Frost on that encounter, I don't think there is a "DPS test" boss in the Tier 11 raids so I just looked at one of the earlier ones.

I have done quite a lot of research on mages as i decided to lvl and play my mage a bit more then my pala. occording to stats fire is top dps, BUT u do require the gear for it, i am currently specced frost /arcane and my frost spec i can get 12k dps and other times i am stuck on 8k, it is pretty dependable on fingers of frost procs, if u miss deepfreeze and leave it for even a second your loosing dps, it hits with glyph depends on procs from trinkets potions ect between 65-85k and that is where we make up on the dps. Frost is very spiky with dps where soemtimes u do alot sometimes not so much, where arcane is alot smoother and more forgiving because it has such an easy playstyle. I really do suggest reading elitist jerks forums about specs and rotations, u will only imporve if u do research there.

Problem with the other 2 specs is you have to be able to stand still for long periods.
We did Magmaw last night and had 2 mages. 1 Arcane and the other Fire (my mage). I out DPS'ed the Arcane mage by far as I can Scorch while moving. Our gear is more or less on par.
He later then changed to Frost for better AoE abilities and still I could out DPS him because I can move and he cannot.
Also, by DPS I mean damage done.
