Which street are you? When did Vumatel say they're coming? I haven't gotten anything yet.

- We'll update you on the planned build schedule, which will usually start around 6 weeks after we've received approval, but we'll let you know in good time before this begins
- You'll be invited to attend a town hall meeting before we start building to answer all of your questions about the roll-out of fibre to your suburb

If you didn't get the Vumatel email, check your spam/other folders. Gmail thought it prudent to put the mail in my "Promotions" category.

Ye. we stuffed in Bellville. Most ISP's don't want to put in a node unless they can get R20,000 per month commitment. (that would be 22-25 houses of R799 each.

Some of the isp's just send you an picture flyer (for you to print and hand out to your neighbors.)

It is very sad. We stuck with ADSL.

Probably something to do with the area Welgedacht side of Featherhead being worked on by Openserve already.

Agreed. So the area's seem to be Van Riebeeckhof, Protea Valley Welgedacht side of Featherhead, Protea Valley East of Featherhead & Door de Kraal

Vuma is coming!!!

Quick summary:
1. Wayleave has been approved
2. Rollout to start 3 July
3. Starting @ Door De Kraal (reason being closest to main hub which is Kenridge School), then Protea Valley East, Then Protea Valley West (Welgedacht side) & finally Van Riebeeckshof
4. Each section will take 4 weeks from start to activation. May be slight delays due to weather. They said normally complete within 2 weeks of estimated dates.

I live top-end Protea Valley Welgedacht side. So hopefully Vuma will be live by end of September on my side. Will not bother going with Openserve in the interim.

I'm also in Door de Kraal. As I understand it, we should be live before August if all goes well.

As far as ISPs go, personally I'm undecided between Crystal Web and Cool Ideas.

* Crystal Web is the cheapest (generally by about R50) with an apparently very good reputation.
* Cool Ideas seem to have an excellent reputation as well, and as far as I can tell, are the only guys actually advertising a voice component explicitly (R85 pm), although I'm sure there are plenty of VOIP options on any of the ISPs. Their voice costs look pretty decent though.
* Web Africa pricing seems basically the same as Cool Ideas, but they only offer the asymmetric packages.

As much as I like Afrihost for ADSL, their fiber prices are just exuberant if you look at their "premium" packages. Their entry level pricing seems to be in the range of all the other players flat rate pricing, but they charge between R200 and R500 (depending on speed) more for a "priority" service. Their "priority" services description matches what the other providers sell as their normal, simple service.
